Plot hole?

Im rewatching the original naruto series and just now i came to the part where the third hokage is fighting orochimaru on the roof of a building. How come no one though about breaking through the roof to get to the third hokage and save him? or the third hokage breaking into the roof to escape? sigh. just to kill off the 3rd hokage huh.

Probably the barrier by the sound 4 was including the roof too, so no one could go from ahead, under, right, or left.

If the barrier could block people from coming in through the sky I imagine it would prevent them coming from below. Or else earth ninja would have been able to escape when Juubito trapped them all in the barrier to blow them up.
