I haven't been known to keep update with video game systems. I still have my SNES and PS1 plugged into my TV. Anyway, in light of these new games for PS4 such as the FFX and FFVII remakes, Final Fantasy World, and FFXV I have really been playing with the idea of buying one. So here's my question to those who have one:

Is there any backwards compatibility for the PS4? I've read a lot of information (or misinformation) on the internets that it is backwards compatible with old PS1 and PS2 games through emulation, but not PS3? Or they may be adding an old PS emulation service, or there is no backwards compatibility and there will never be. I could be reading old information, so this question is to those who own one.

The lack of backwards compatibility isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me, even though I am primarily a retro gamer.

No it does not backwards compatibility, but it has a service called PS Now. It provides you with ps3 games (that you have to stream, so if your internet is bad, dont buy it) I heard that ps2 and ps 1 games might Come to it too, but there Arent right now :)
Ps: sorry if my english is a little bad :)

Yeah, I was worried they wouldn't actually add an emulator, but create some online streaming software. That is useless for games that people already own. Who wants to buy a game twice? The last system I bought was a PS2, and I like how backwards compatible that was.

Oh my lord!!!! Final Fantasy 7 Remake!!!! So Hypped!!!
Yeah, and it isn't just a port, it's a total remake. It's been a long time coming. I remember seeing commercials for the original FFVII and the graphics blew my mind. I saved every dime and dollar to buy a PS1. Of course the old PS1 models had that weird shake screen problem. The day I finally got FF7, I had to send my PS in to Sony to be corrected, but it was totally worth it.

Actually for PSN Now they only have a rent feature, so PS4 is slacking on backwards compatibility and retro services.
Anything else you read that isn't from an official source is a lie.

What exactly is the rent feature? I don't get Sony. It's like a step back in consumerism. The Wii revolutionized retro and modern gaming.

There's no backwards compatible only one that has it is Nintendo Wii U Xbox 1 is limited it's really up to the developers , That's why i only buy Exclusives on my next gen console. I buy my 3rd party games now on steam i don't trust Sony or Microsoft anymore if your worried about backwards compatible, check out steam consoles you'll never have to worry about that issue again.

No impossible. You shouldn't have bought a ps4 in the first place. It has no games, bad internet, Sony is poor, bad framerate and an ugly ass controller. You should have bought a Xbox one or gaming pc.

I have both systems i can tell you that's untrue Microsoft hasn't realeased a exclusive on there side in 7 months, Games like Halo master chief collection couldn't even connect to it's own servers for like 6 months smh etc . There are plenty of games for

Ps4 Infamous first light
Infamous second son
guilty gears xrd
Killzone Shadow Fall
Bloodborne
The order 1886

PS4 has more exclusives than Xbox 1

Well I don't own one. My post said I was playing around with the idea of buying one. I will never own an Xbox. I don't play any console games except RPGs (Unless I'm playing NES platform games), and even those are few and far between. So, the Final Fantasy games are the only reasons I would purchase a console. I mostly play WoW on my gaming PC. And on my PC I have most retro gaming emulators.

Edit: I grew up with 8bit and 16bit console wars. I'm going to be impressed by any of these new system's framerates.

The PS3 system is the only capable of running PS2\PS1 library games. It depends whether the game you want is either in PS-Store or not. For example, Dino Crisis is in the American PS-Store, but not in the European PS-Store. Another example is Vigilante 8. This game is not on PS-Store at all. So you see? You need to look at WIKIs or any source whether your favorite PSone games on PS-Store or not.

Forget PS4. You can play PS3, PS2 and PSone games on PS4, but it requires Internet. Probably subscription too. PS-Plus maybe. Is even your Internet fast?

I don't want to rebuy any of my games. I own them already. My internet is good enough for WoW and Netflix.

I'm not sure if the PS3 could run CDs. Anyone wanna play PS1\PS2 games on PS3 they buy them digitally. Things changed. They don't use memory card.
I thought I read something that says PS4 plays blueray, but not CDs. The PS4 has a harddrive, it should be able to save game data without memory cards just like a Playstation emulator on a PC. It seems like the PS4 has all the potential to be backwards compatible, they just don't want it to. I mean...why would you if you could just resell all of your games? It worked for Nintendo.

PS3 and PS4 read BluRay and DVDs. Just the thought of using CDs never crossed anyone's mind. So perhaps it does read CDs. But who uses CDs these days? You should assume that your physical copies of your games might get stolen or destroyed over time. What are you gonna do when this happen?

If someone's PS3 been stolen or destroyed, he can get another console and redownload the games of PS1 anytime. No pay.

I live in the moment. I've had most of these games 25+ years. In this moment, I don't need to rebuy them. PS1 games play on CDs, PS2 started using DVDs. I'm not anti-digital media. I believe the option should be there for both. It might not matter for someone young, who never owned those games, but to someone older who has spent a lot of money over time it is a bigger deal.

Is this even a problem? Most people who have the disks have the corresponding consoles still. It's really not needed when you can just plug up your old stuff.

And saving consoles is not hard, just keep the box when you buy one.

Yeah, the classic games today digitally aren't the same price as their time as physical.

It's not. I have my NES and SNES in the box still. Some TVs still have an RCA or coax adapter, but eventually they won't. My memory cards for PS1 have died though. I've just been using my PC emulator, but not all of the games will rip to ISO or run off the disc. I'm particularly having trouble getting Breath of Fire III to work.
