I only heard about this today, why the hell are Nintendo changing Pikachu's name I have read various articles but I don't understand fully, I know partly its about translation or something, if someone can explain it it would be helpful.

Anyway what do you think about u think this, changing such an iconic name!

Update
Thanks to people in this thread, I understand now its just in China they are changing Pikachu's name not globally.

We discuss about Naruto here and not Pokemon

Its like you go to McDonald's and ask for Flat Tire replacement. Very wrong.

OK, on topic I will check for it.

This is what the article said it will be:
Pikachu was originally translated as 比卡超 (Bei-kaa-chyu) in Hong Kong. Now it is named 皮卡丘 (Pikaqiu). While the name 皮卡丘 in Mandarin sounds similar to the global name Pikachu (as it was always called in China and Taiwan), it reads as Pei-kaa-jau in Cantonese, which doesn’t sound the same at all.

His name was meant to be pronounced as picklechew. Man Pikachu loves his pickles.

It's just some dumb translation controversy of Pokemon Sun and Moon in China.

Well as a citizen there I see where they're coming from. Most people from Hong Kong are desperately trying to defend their culture/identity and prevent assimilation from mainland china, so the last thing they want is having a 'mistranslation' of such a classical character shoved down their throat.

Still, I think it's stupid af. Most HK pokemon fans call pikachu in either japanese or english and don't really care what its chinese translation is. The localist politicians are taking advantage from the protest to rally support which is only possible because ppl there are highly discontent with social isuues and can be easily triggered by seemingly trivialities.
