[Discussion] Piccolo regeneration questions

In the buu saga, piccolo gets turned into stone by Dabura.
I think it was kid trunks who accidently knocked him over, making the stone piccolo fall into several pieces.
When Dabura was defeated, those turned to stone turned back to normal.
Meaning also Piccolo, but now in pieces.

Than suddenly kid trunks see's piccolo whole and wonders how.
Piccolo explains that he can regenerate as long as his head is still intact.

Recently I watched some Dragonball episodes and kid Goku kills king piccolo (the part that shed with Kami).
Goku flies right through him, blasting a huge hole in his chest.
King piccolo spits out an egg who he calls his son and than king piccolo explodes and thus dies.

My questions.
Couldnt king piccolo just regenerate as his head was still intact?
Didnt he have the energy for it and therefore chose for the egg method?
As he was more or less out of energy in that fight.
Or are his son piccolo his regeneration abilities more developed?

What I can't work out is why Frieza and Frost shot holes into him but apparently couldn't regen? If he can regen a whole body, then a teeny hole ought not be too much of a problem.

Freeza kept firing like a machine gun.
Obviously he cant fix the holes straight away or concentrate for it if freeza shoots a new one in him about every sec or so .

Against Frost he purposely didnt regen it for a while, to make Frost fall into his trap.

Well since his regeneration is a conscious effort not automatic, I'd assume it has something to do with energy.

The whole body thing might be unique to piccolo due to how strong he became and he has fused with multiple namekians and became a "super namekian" which could of increased his regeneration abilities.

Namekian regeneration takes a lot of energy. You can see that when Nail fights Freiza or pretty much any time Piccolo fights and has to regenerate. Perhaps fusion enhanced his regeneration capabilities.
