Re: PhotM #1: Discussion Thread

I dont see a reason for it to be open.
The open submission thread helps spot ripped pics. The contest is new and we didn't have any "incident" yet but ripping pics from the net is very easy, I expect that we will soon see this. Adding a NB prefix somewhere isn't that hard for someone with some editing skills.
Look at how many people get busted in Art contest.
Plus, the public thread encourages variety. Members see the submitted photos and most of the times try to do.something better and different.

Lol

Ripped entries can be filtered just as well by the host, also after the vote is up, people can check them and report, and it gets disqualified.
If someone has really good skills, you wont really be able to spot it anyways. Also Akasha said that effects can be used. Now that's quite vague ;)

Yeah public submission encourages variety, that's why 80% of the entries are about flowers and it's also such a good thing that everyone waits till the last moment to submit.

I take it that the hosts have a life. Searching all the entries for ripped pics can be time consuming, plus it's not always easy to detect a rip, it requires certain knowledge and you can't expect the host to take this responsibility.

Actually, there are programs to identify edited (to the point of what part has been edited, where, how etc to photo).
No it's not. Effects to enhance and make your picture more appealing, not affects that create, alter, add, abstract etc data that are not part of the original picture. I take it that everyone can understand the difference between those two things. Unless they're stupid.

Of course some entries will be similar since they must follow a certain theme. Procrastination is a sweet thing.

Other than that, I think the theme and the public submission is what kept this contest alive. Since it's new and not constantly popular, it needs to be out in the open. Also, keep in mind that there are some pictures without the NB prefix on it submitted, meaning that some members don't even bother read the whole rules. Turning it into a PM submission will kill it imo. I think the contest needs more time to become more popular and known around the base and then it can be turned into a private submission contest.

Then simply forward the entries to Yard and Naruta. Others dont bother about looking for ripped entries anyway.

Then just the entries should be limited to the first 10 submissions. So that the host can have her life. Also this way people wont procrastinate and wait to see others' entries first.

Thanks for calling me stupid, I know nothing about photoshop. But if it needs special skills and programs to spot if something was added, why do you think that others will spend hours to detect it?

Yes most entries are similar because the theme is given so dont make general statements that open submission promotes variety, it's only true when people can choose the theme for themselves.

I think what kills a contest is when people vote for their friends.

As someone who is participating in the contest, I don´t think it´s fair if the submissions were checked by me. It´s as if, you´re in a contest and then you say "Oh, this guy is fake, that guy is fake, everyone is fake, I´m the real original one".

A few posts ago I proposed submitting the picture from 2 different angles. That was not my idea: it was Yard´s.

It´s hard to know if a picture was taken by that same person or not. And since editing minor things with photoshop is allowed, it´s hard to detect if the picture has been touched to be more beautiful or it´s been touched to add "NB" in it. And the only way to say that "NB" from a certain picture was added with Photoshop is to actually find the original picture without any edits. Since people post pictures everywhere and some pictures are private, it can´t be found (For example, the first picture I submitted that didn´t have "NB" is in an album in my Facebook account, which is set to private to anyone who is not in my friend list. When I tried searching that image without being on Facebook, I couldn´t find it)

Yeah yeah true, you are a participant. But then I support the 2 angles idea. One pic with NB, the other with your hand in it for example.

The rest of your post supports me that open submission doesnt help finding ripped entries

Re: PhotM #1: Discussion Thread

I was thinking of, for example, submitting 2 pictures: 1 picture with NB and one picture of the same thing but something simple in it that changes according to the theme?

For example:

Theme: Sleep time
For proving the image is yours: Add a teddy bear

I submit a picture of a bed with NB in it and another picture of the same bed and everything but with a teddy bear sitting on the bed

Theme: Spring
For proving image is yours: Hold one of the objects in the picture

I submit a picture of a bunch of flowers with NB mentioned in it and another picture with the same flowers and everything just with my holding the flowers.

I agree with Naruta's suggestion. It's like verification process.

Dear Akasha,

Always make the theme NB associated.
Please do not allow picture manipulation.
Making the submission private or public it's your call .:)
Yes to 3 weeks submission 1 week voting.or make it 2-2.

Sincerely your's
Noodles :bouncy:

Yes , i got ur point. But unfortunately this is not something we can control. It's their freedom as voters and as members of the community.

The only solution is to make your picture worthy of the votes you're going to earn.;)

For you Kobak. Keep calm and eat flowers. Peace Kobak. XD

Re: PhotM #1: Discussion Thread

I'll apologise for not replying earlier as I was in middle of some RL stuff and really couldn't.

First of all, for now this contest will be public. I can't really check every submission and go through the process if its real or fake but I can always talk to Yard to check it as I've been doing this so far and he has been of great help. One of reasons this will stay a public contest is that every time a new photo has been submitted there is someone checking the submission thread and actually thinking about taking part. If I were to keep it private so many people wouldn't even bother checking it as this is a newer contest and not many know about it. Keeping it public will actually attract public with every new post that comes within this sub-forum and contest.

When it comes to picture manipulation, I'll allow it for now but as the contest progress I'll think about it. You can edit basic things when it comes to pictures like colors/brightness and similar but no great changes to the pictures. Also adding NB/NarutoBase and similar with Photoshop is against the rules.

Now coming to the point of having an NB sign. One month might be not having NB in the picture but that month you'll have to submit more photos with more then a single angle of a single scene you are taking picture of. And tell me which one will advance further into voting thread.

I'll keep 3 weeks of submission, one week of voting.

When it comes to voting thread... The amount of votes gained will be anonymous until of course voting ends.

Then just the entries should be limited to the first 10 submissions. So that the host can have her life. Also this way people wont procrastinate and wait to see others' entries first.
This is a no no. The amount of people that make their submission will be the amount of people advancing to the voting part of the contest. It's up to a person when they plan to make their submission. Some might wait to see others and some might have some great ideas and thus make their submission earlier.

Anyhow I remember someone recommending a Culture theme,so what do you think of that?
Also some theme suggestions? What about Black and White? Creating a contest based on a color of sorts and thus make the variety of things that can be done bigger.

This is just... Firstly, they have a life too. Second, I don't understand why they have to hold such privilege and responsibility. As far as I know they look for ripped entries in Art contest because they like it, and they do a good job, but they are not the higher judging authority when it comes to ripped things. Lastly, pictures getting DQ in PM's will raise an immense wave of nagging and wigging (like "why was it dq, you don't have any proofs, show me your proofs" etc etc).

Thanks for calling me stupid, I know nothing about photoshop. But if it needs special skills and programs to spot if something was added, why do you think that others will spend hours to detect it?
You are the only one who called yourself stupid. I simply said that there's a difference between enhancing an image and changing it. The people who take advantage of this "window" in the rules to create a pic that was not originally according to the rules (like adding NB perfix, or something to meet the given theme) are stupid, as they deliberately manipulating the rules to their own accordance.

Yes most entries are similar because the theme is given so dont make general statements that open submission promotes variety, it's only true when people can choose the theme for themselves.
Don't tell me what to do. Yasmine changed her pic just because it felt to similar to another one. I changed my original idea because I saw someone who did it already. So yes, imo open submission can promote variety in the contest.

I think what kills a contest is when people vote for their friends.
Then be a good boy and don't vote for your friends.

Noooo, I am too old, I no longer have any teddy bears.:T_T:
Other than this, I like the idea.

And since the voting poll is up I will suggest some themes for next photm.

  • Buildings.
  • Macro photography (I know it sounds challenging but it quite simple)
  • Landscapes
  • Night

Either they dont have friends.

Or they have sensible friends.

If ever I win again it's worth the pain in the neck I suffered to get the right lighting and angle. See my point.

Re: PhotM #1: Discussion Thread

Making the contest anonymous would be a great thing, since then we'd be sure that this is not voting for the friends but for the most beautiful entry but then again I think that doing so would definitively affect the whole contest negatively.

Ripped entries are big problem and if you would to turn this into anonymous contest you would need people who would go through every entry and since it is anonymous that would mean that only the host could do that and that's just too much work for one person. Also, if you would ask a help from someone else in that job you should definitively forbid that person to participate.

Being able to see other submissions will make a good competitive atmosphere. You know, when you see someone else's good entry you will be more ready to try harder to be better than him/her so the entries will be better like that, in my opinion.

I like the idea of anonymous contests because there is always risk of contest becoming a popularity one but I just think it's too early to make this contest anonymous.

Anyhow I remember someone recommending a Culture theme,so what do you think of that?

I prefer Black and White theme but then again Culture theme is good too.
And yeah I like the Landscape theme that someone suggested.

I missed that part earlier.
Between black&white and culture I think I prefer culture.
