I believe Neji is above part one Shikamaru's level but I'm not sure he can win this.

Open field does give Tayuya an advantage since Neji has a Byakugan able to see through trees and see Tayuya's location whereas Neji can easily escape from Tayuya's line of sight in a forest much like Shikamaru did (

). However, in this particular location, Neji can't escape Tayuya's line of sight so he isn't constantly going to evade those chakra sucking ghosts. Not to mention in a lot of the scans you showed me, Neji actually touched the spiders and if he does the same with Tayuya's chakra sucking ghosts, well he loses chakra and gets weakened especially as the fight prolongs. In another scan you linked me, Neji actually has three projectiles stuck in his back so I don't get what you are trying to say. If he gets hit like that, he is going to run out of chakra and die (

so while he was in freefall, he was still moving in mid air, if Neji decides to use rotation, he is a stationary sitting duck. Sure Neji can evade them, but for how long? The closer he tries to get to Tayuya, the easier it is for Tayuya to hit him. Unlike Shikamaru, Neji running away from Tayuya makes no sense since he is a CQC fighter who has to get close. Not to mention Neji can't just slip into a forest unlike Shikamaru due to the location.

Like I posted in the panel previously, Shikamaru managed to evade the doki because he used the footing from the tree branch he was on to jump out of the way. It is more difficult to do this while on ground since one can't adjust their trajectory on a flat plain. Actually Shikamaru had an easier time getting close to Tayuya because he does have some mid range ninja tools and had the element of surprise while Tayuya was blinded. Neji is even more limited since his best offence is 8 trigrams, 64 palms which can only work if he gets close to Tayuya but he won't be able to since Neji can't catch Tayuya off guard and Tayuya can position her 3 dokis strategically, making CQC difficult.

Yes he did say this. He came to the conclusion that she is weak to close combat due to the flute being her only weapon. Then Shikamaru said someone like Neji or Kiba would have been a better match, i'll find the scan if need be.

Also to add, what makes Neji a gifted Hyuuga member is his ability to exert chakra from multiple points. Arguably genjutsu does trap him and end the fight, but his talent w/ chakra exertion could potentially allow him to injure himself. Not saying this is fact. Genjutsu can end this fight.
