time to discuss why i think pain/nagato's hype is higher than perhaps anyone's besides sage of six paths, and kabuto (kabuto was hyped as invincible and closer than anyone to SO6P. he bore witness to madara and nagato, so hes not in a position to be that deluded and considering kabuto's army, im inclined to agree).
first mentions of him are of tobi declaring pain is the leader and failure wont be accepted
according to konan, who at the time we didn't really know about, claims pain's never lost a battle and tobi agrees
he managed to make sure no one really knew much about him, except for tobi and konan. so in truth he was more mythic than hashirama or madara, who were well known as powerful and stories told about them for decades to come. but who in 50-60 years will know everything about the man who single handedly solo'd konoha and ame?
even for the fact people spoke of him with absolute reverence, it was because the accomplishment of taking out hanzo made people think he was a living GOD. pain took this title and ran with it, dealing out judgement like a god might. the other person whos said to be like a living god was hiruzen. but that was the opinion of people in his village, and no one denied he exists based on his strength level did they? i understand SO6P since it was so damn long ago.
but to say "you're a god" because hes elusive and defeated hanzo is...insane.
people saw him fight and defeat half a village by himself and STILL they dismissed it as a legendary act of god or plain denied it happened.
again addressing others hype, how many people could have really bore witness to prime hiruzen going all out? even orochimaru stated he'd NEVER seen him strain himself. now if oro actually agreed with the god hype, wouldnt he say "you were the god of shinobi" not "poeple used to say you were god of shinobi"? and wouldnt the same apply for amekagure nins saying "yes pain IS a god of shinobi, STFU outsider"? isn't that hype superior in weight/signficance?
jiraiya then called this "soloing a village alone" even one so small as ame, as impossible. jiraiya is a man who doesn't deal in legends and believing in petty hype. he had no problems facing pain himself even after the stories. so for him to dismiss soloing a village as impossible and moving on, says something about pain himself. the fact is jiraiya underestimated him and that led to his downfall.
here we learn about hanzo a bit more. he was renowned so much for his strength that EVERY single shinobi in the world will know who he is instantly. jiraiya's travelled far and wide. HE KNOWS HIS SHIT. and it was called impressive you could get to him at all considering the traps and guards he had set up. he was confident in his safety, so much so that he neglected his training but jiraiya doesn't know that. he was judging hanzo's power off of prime hanzo who he battled personally. again jiraiya knows his shit. he's been there, fighting against this legend of a man who was so respected that everyone remembered they should refer to the sannin by their new name just for SURVIVING against prime hanzo
jiraiya next wonders why and how hanzo could lose. of course he finds out later on. he says he cant believe one person could take him down
here we find out he mastered everything jiraiya taught him, well versed in every aspect of ninjutsu and on top of that learnt how to use all 5 elements in one body. some people can use this by taking over others (kakuzu) or by rikudo's fan but never has someone simply learnt them all alone. especially at the age of 10.
here jiraiya says he has no choice but to go all out because hes simply against rinnegan despite fighting only animals so far. to top it all off most shinobi believe theres no such thing. so pain can pretty much take anyone he likes off guard (barring obviously the likes of madara and itachi)

. this is insane. how could you have never lost a fight in your entire life? remember chouji said yahikos body looked to be 25-30. and nagato's in his 40s in part 2. and remember the kind of calibre shinobi we know to exist at this point. konans saying theres no need to worry as no one has ever been comparable to him.

(technically it was 6, i know). jiraiya knows about beings like itachi, kisame, raikage and he still thinks pain is not an alias and its simply impossible for anyone in part 2 to have taken hanzo down. he likely dismissed it as bullshit that hanzo could lose so easily and assumed pain got him off guard or something. or he wouldnt have later said "ill be fighting a tough opponent"
