Pains can't be sensed

I don't remember who made it, but I read a vs thread where people were arguing if jiraiya could sense or not, re-reading the pain arc I found an interesting scan one that makes me believe that the guy was right. Jiraiya can sense, it's just that the pains couldn't be sensed. That's why neither Fukasaku or shima sensed ashura path.

He say's "I couldn't sense him?" implying that he was moulding chakra at the time and sensing so they wouldn't be ambushed like they were, but he couldnt sense him anyway

I think it's because they're corpses and chakra isn't flowing in their chakra networks. And the chakra Nagato uses to control them is on a different frequency if i remember correctly, thats why Naruto had to stab himself to find him.

When Naruto learned that the real Pain (Nagato) Wasn't among the one's he was fighting he had to stab himself with one of the black chakra recievers to trace it back to Nagato. and as OP pointed out some other examples. SO yeah it appears they cannot be sensed by traditional sensor means anyway.

Naruto can sense them. During the pain fight he was an amature, when he fought tobi he could sense exactly where the receivers were hidden.

Also he could sense the animal path in total darkness when they were in gamabunta's mouth

But its probably because naruto mastered sage mode so he had all the feats

Not just jiraiya, this guy as well. But i'm not entirely sure if hey can be sensed or not sense as gerkak said Naruto could sense them when he fought them.

Changing the chakra frequency that is being transmitted is very difficult to sense by the best of sensors.

Sage Mode sensory is different from Chakra Sensory. Sage Mode sensors can simply sense the world around them as a whole, not just chakra, which is why Naruto could locate the receiver. Chakra sensors have been shown to be unable to detect them. You can't use a fail at chakra sensory to say Sage Mode sensory wouldn't work.

I think it was honestly just plot hype inconsistencies, same as when the Pain appeared behind Jiraiya and took his arm... I think Kishi just hadn't put as much thought into sensory powers yet. Rules regarding sensing became more structured once Naruto started using it. We know Pains have Chakra; at a minimum, they are walking chakra receivers. I'd argue they actually have more chakra than the average shinobi. And of course, Jiraiya should have been able to sense any sneak attacks with Senjutsu (although Madara/Kaguya also failed in this regard).
