Easily one of THE best villains in the series and yes I like him in some ways more than Madara and Kaguya. The Rinnegan is unmatched in looking so bad ass on Deva Path and he also had the vibe of a final villain to him

I'm laughing hard at people saying "pain was good but nagato wasn't" despite the fact that they're the same exact person. .......

Retardation level over 900000

be fair, when he was still pretending to be pain he was a far better villain than when he was nagato. like "Madara" and obito.

Pein is beast. No nonsense type of guy. There are many cartoons, games, movies, shows that introduce a bad ass character but they fall short because of some corny shit but pein lives up to it. He has that mature strict assertive presence that a leader should have. At first, Daybreaker was not too sure about the 6 peins and nagato controlling them all but after learning about Nagato's past, this one has accepted him. Great character.

I too don't get the differentiation between Pain and Nagato. Nagato was Pain. It was him talking the entire time, not Yahiko or any of the persona bodies. I guess a random body can confuse some people. Kinda hilarious.

Pain/Pein was the highest point in the series villain wise.

Not only was he set up well, but he presented himself in a very good way. He was a complete bad ass, was very dangerous, and had a back story that both explained his motivations perfectly and linked him directly to the Naruto cast.

It was prior to Naruto himself getting crazy overpowered, and still showed a great deal of skill and effort to deal with. Having Nagato controlling all of the paths at once made him very tricky and dangerous. It showed Naruto at his best, and also allowed his weaknesses to be shown and exploited.

He was also a villain you could understand perfectly well. He wanted peace, but his life was so full of turmoil and loss that he firmly believed that what he was doing was the only way he could honor the wishes of both Yahiko and his former teacher. Naruto's TNJ actually made sense in this instance, and has never been as relevant to a villain as it was here. His attempt at redemption fit, and was a great capstone to the arc. It showed how much Naruto has grown both in skill, and in attitude.

IMO, the series went downhill after.
Oro was also a great villain, but they never set him up with a great final arc to give him a send off worthy of his character. His redemption, if it even was/is one, was handled even worse.

Obito, Madara, and Kaguya just are not well done villains. They all had potential, but far too many issues with the last war arc. Nothing got the time it needed to really build or mature into anything, especially not Kaguya. Even if she'd been hinted at a few times... she just was no much of a character.

In all seriousness Pain was a shitty character.
His weird personality change was just wrong.

In all seriousness Pain was a shitty character.
His weird personality change was just wrong.

How so?
He had been surrounded by death and loss for so long. Naruto himself was a student of the same teacher. In many ways he was much like a young version of Yahiko.
They had many of the same dreams, similar personalities.
They wanted the same thing, but Naruto had managed to keep his way better than Nagato had.

The book Jiraya had written used Nagato's own words, which Naruto took to heart and was even named after.

That hit Nagato close to home and made him remember who he once had been. He put his faith in Naruto, but also cautioned him about the trials he would likely go through, and that keeping true to his path wasn't always going to be easy. Friends would die, things would look bleak.

Of all the TNJ in the series, that one was the one that was most fitting, since the two involved had a lot of shared history.

It is arguable that Pain had some sort of consciousness and awareness of what he was saying.

If he was really 100% a puppet, he wouldn't have expressed Pain with screams and facial expressions.

And to be 100% honest, the main reason I don't like Nagato is because of his hair. I hate the swept down, over his eyes looks so much.

Obviously they took some liberties there. Having them all hang around as monotone puppets that never reacted or expressed anything would have been pretty boring.

When the control was removed, they simply fell over as they were dead.
It's likely the technique imparts some portion of the users will into each one. That would let them react much quicker and also be more effective. So they are not individuals, and are all still Nagato, but they are able to react individually until control is broken or removed.

Pain was the best villian.

Naruto vs. Pain had one of the best hype because it was not driven over long periods of time. It literally happened because of Jiraiya's death, which made the revenge action so much sweeter.

Pain. Most epic character hands down. Best villain, best philosophy in life, a part of one of the best fights of the series, responsible for the best arc on Naruto.

It was also the first fight where IMO Naruto's swag with that cloak somewhat matched Sasuke

He's indeed one of the best villains. His introduction as the leader of Akatsuki has added a lot to the series. The hype, the actual sense of danger (when he one shot'd Konoha and caused so many casualties). His arc is arguably one of the best so far. Not to mention that his motives and actions were somewhat understandable and made sense given his background and his overall view on the shinobi world which he knew how to explain through his speeches. He even almost swayed the MC at some point.
