The Jaeger Program

When I was a kid, whenever I felt small and lonely, I would look up at the stars in the cloudless dark night, wondered if there was life up there. Turned out I was looking in the wrong direction. When alien life entered our world, it was from deep beneath the Pacific Ocean. A fissure between two tectonic plates was created, a portal between dimensions. It was called the breach. I was 15 when the first Kaiju made land in San Francisco. These Kaiju is an amphibious race, which are genetically engineered by an extra dimensional race of sentient beings. They are extremely hostile and toxic creatures which were seemingly designed with the intention to wipe out humankind. It was later proven that these creatures had been here before, during the Triassic Period, the precursors attempted to colonize the Earth, but the environment proved to be uninhabitable for them and prevented them from inhabiting our planet. Though today the environment has changed due to pollution of the Earth’s environment by mankind, which in the end, made the perfect conditions for a colonization. By the time tanks, jets and missiles took the first Kaiju down six days and thirty-five miles later, three cities were destroyed, San Francisco, Oakland and Sacramento. Tens of thousands of lives were lost. We mourned our dead, memorialized the attack, and moved on.

And then, only six months later the second landed in Manila. The Kaiju created a toxic phenomenon called Kaiju Blue which caused water to become undrinkable and the ground to be uninhabitable by people. The third attack hit London destroying almost the entire city and finally the fourth attack arrived. Only at that point we finally learned that this was not going to stop. This was just the beginning. We needed a new weapon, the entire world came together, pulling their resources from previous experiments and projects, and throwing aside old rivalry for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters, we created monsters of our own.

The jaeger program was born.

It was a quiet morning in the City of Vancouver, the sky was filled with rain clouds and the leaves were beginning to fall. The winter was coming; everyone in the city was either scared or simply acting normal after the recent attack on the city. The government had sent in the military to patrol the borders while they took down the giant Kaiju named, Trespasser. The morning the beast attacked, Peter had just gotten out of bed when the whole block was swiped clean of houses by the giant beast, it had an enormous head seemingly shaped like a double-edged axe, it weighed more than two thousand tons and stood almost a hundred meters in height, it took a single nuclear missile to take it out. When it landed it felt like a large earthquake which shattered windows and made large skyscrapers come crumbling down. Thousands of people were lost that day and Vancouver was almost turned to ash. Today Peter was walking down the streets on his way to his older brother Thomas whom lived just ten streets further down from his own house. It was cold and quiet, people did not want to leave their homes, they were afraid of another attack. Peter on the other hand did not really care much for an attack, of course he was afraid, yet he had nothing to live for.

When Peter walked up the front porch of the beautiful little house that his brother lived in, he was met by his brother whom opened the door and out came a large white Husky, it was Aero; it dashed to Peter and jumped on him throwing him down on the ground licking his face like crazy. Peter tried for several moments to get the dog off, laughing, smiling and petting it, before he finally got up and walked up to his brother. He could feel all the dogs’ hair across his face and the freezing cold wind that flies through his hair while he was standing in the doorway. He could see that his brother was still feeling the guilt and sadness from the day the beast attack, because that day his wife died.

Peter: “Hey man, are you alright… you sure we are going to do this?”

Thomas: “Yea… I need to get my mind off things…. but why should it be this?”

Peter: “Honestly…. I got nothing else to do, unlike you… you got a beautiful home and a sweet dog, and you don’t need anything else”

Thomas: “Well I need a job… and I hope you know what we are doing”

Peter: “Of course I do… now come on and let’s go”

Thomas walked inside to take on his jacket and to put the dog inside, he closed the door and locked it before he went for a walk with his brother Peter for a while; him and Peter were going down to the facility. They walked several miles through the biting cold wind while the leaves were flying through the air and the few people on the streets glanced at them with strange and scared faces. The two brothers made their way down the road until they finally reached a large facility known as the Jericho Facility. It was a former construction site for bridge and metal constructions, but now it was purchased by the United States Military Resource Division, and turned into a military facility which were recruiting new workers, soldiers and positions were open for many interesting jobs. Peter was jobless and had no money what so ever so he took a slight chance at going to this place unknown of what was going to happen, while his brother owned a Martial Arts Dojo in the middle of Vancouver, earning quite the living, up until the attack.

The brothers were met by two US Marines at the entrance to the facility where they stood in full military outfit, large black boots, camouflage clothing and a large M16 rifle on the back while holding out registration papers. You could see their harsh faces which had seen much blood and much war throughout their time in the army and you could see they had been molded by the military to become the war machines they are today. Their bodies signified their skills within their field showing that no one should stand in their way. When the two brothers walked up they looked somewhat intimidating, but that was probably their purpose to keep criminals and bad people from approaching the facility.

Peter: “Hello, my name is Peter Nelson and this is my brother Thomas Nelson…. we are here to apply for a job…”

Marine: “Show me your passports and tell me your specific skills…”

Peter: “Oh… umh… I thought we were going to talk to someone else for an interview…”

Marine: “Sir, just answer the question or step away from the facility”

Peter: “Well to be honest…. I don’t have great skill in many things… I used to be in construction as an engineer and don’t know if it counts but I was training boxing for several years many years back…”

Thomas: “Yea and I’m a martial artist and it is what I did for a living”

Marine: “Alright sirs…. Would you and your brother please step inside and wait for someone to take you to the office”

Peter: “Alright….”

Peter and Thomas were led inside the facility where they were situated in a small lounge filled with people seeking jobs and hopefully a new life outside of Vancouver. Both Peter and Thomas looked quite normal in the bunch of people whom had arrived, Thomas was a tall aged man, 5 years older than Peter, he had a well-trained body and was probably the most skilled fighter present and a hard worker. Even though you could still see on his face that he had been through a lot and that he was beginning to get tired of his life in Vancouver. On the other hand, Peter was a smaller guy, still rather tall; he had nearly no fat on his body, only muscles. He had dark brown hair and he loved to wear blue shirts and dark pants, he was a skilled boxer. He usually did not do very well in school, always getting in fights where his brother had to help him out. These two brothers were called in to a final interview with a man called General Shepherd whom would define if they would get a job or be thrown out on the streets again.

Shepherd: “Gentlemen, please sit down”

Both Peter and Thomas sat down in two large leather chairs that stood in front of the desk, where General Shepherd sat in an even larger chair with a large wooden desk situated between them. The wall on the back was filled with pictures of himself and his friends and family in the army, or so that was what Peter and Thomas presumed.

Shepherd: “So… my men tells me you two are skilled fighters and have little experience in construction and for that matter any other fields…”

Thomas: “Well you see…”

Shepherd: “Just don’t talk and let me finish… you two lack experience and skill in many fields… we live off of construction here, we have hundreds of people who come in everyday trying to get a job who are more qualified than both of you!”

Peter: “I understand that sir, but we really need a job… so please don’t turn us down”

Peter almost looked desperate as he looked at the General while he tried to hide his hands which were shaking from sheer desperation and due to the cold. He was sweating like a pig trying not to burst out with emotions in front of his brother and the general whom both seemed quite calm and collected.

Shepherd: “Perhaps… I might have just the job for you two… it’s not an easy one, but it might be possible”

Peter: “Anything you got we will take!”

Shepherd: “You two are brothers…. You know each other very well and have lived almost all your lives together… hm… you should be drift compatible…”

Thomas: “What do you mean drift compatible? What is the job?”

Shepherd: “Gentlemen, you two will be assigned to our Jaeger Program which is situated in Alaska, you will be sent there immediately with an air transport…”

Peter: “Wait what is it?”

Shepherd: “Son… it is classified information which only the Marshall can reveal when you arrive…”

Thomas: “Common Peter, let’s just take the job…”

Peter: “Alright fine we’ll take it…”

Shepherd: “Great… Commander would you please escort the two gentlemen here to the hangar, they are going to the Shatterdome”

The two brothers were escorted through the facility; they saw hundreds of workers welding metal and bending it, creating electrical surges and different tools. Yet these tools were enormous it was like they were building a skyscraper sized object of what their goal was. They walked over a catwalk through the facility, the heat was almost unbearable, but when they finally reached the end and went through the door, they came into a large hangar which contained a single large airplane, a Hercules. This large airplane was supposed to take the two brothers and a bunch of other people to what the general called the Shatterdome. The brothers had no idea what the Jaeger Program was or what they were going in to, but they really had no choice, they wanted to start a new life and this was their chance.

They were all escorted onboard the Hercules and situated in their seats, while they were strapping their seatbelts and preparing for takeoff. A lieutenant walked into the back of the airplane where the brothers and the rest of the people were sitting and waiting for takeoff, while you could hear the engines outside heating, it sounded like a hurricane outside. The pilots in the front were talking to the tower over the radio, while the lieutenant was briefing the new recruits.

Lieutenant: “Alright everyone… you have all been recruited for the Shatterdome, when you reach your destination you will be met by Marshall Pentacost, he will be the one to determine if your physical form and skill is enough for you to take on the job in the Jaeger Program…”

Peter: “What in the world is the Jaeger Program” He whispered to his brother”

Thomas: “I got no clue…”

Lieutenant: “Gentlemen… either you talk to me about the Jaeger Program or you stay quiet”

Peter: “Yes sir… but what is the Jaeger Program?”

Lieutenant: “All you need to know right now is that it is a Military Operation against the Kaiju, and that you will be briefed by Marshall Pentacost when you arrive”

Thomas: “Seems alright to me… I think it would be good to get moving then…”

Lieutenant: “Indeed, I will inform the pilots that we are ready for takeoff…”

A few moments after the Lieutenant went into the cockpit, they could all feel the Hercules roll out of the hangar and onto the runway. From there the Hercules kept gaining speed, pushing everyone back in their seats while the Hercules reached a speed of 500 kilometers per hour. It took off into the skies above Vancouver and went through the clouds so you could see the clear blue sky and the sun shining bright on the airplane. It headed straight towards Alaska for a secret location known as the Shatterdome. Most of the people on board kept to themselves while eating a sandwich or sleeping and some were wondering what their job was going to be. Peter noticed a man sitting in the corner rolling his dog tag between his fingers while starring calmly into the wall on the opposite side.

Peter: “Hey, my name is Peter… how are you?”

He was trying to start a conversation with the man, since he knew he was going to work with his brother and these people possible for the rest of his life. He always had a difficult time doing such a thing, but he tried his best.

Steven: “Hey Peter, I’m Steven and I’m just fine…”

Peter: “Do you know anything about the place where we are going…”

Steven: “Honestly I have no idea it even existed…”

Peter: “Well I hope it is an easy job… hehe”

Steven: “Seriously… this is top secret…. What you probably signed up for is possible the most dangerous and difficult job ever”

Thomas: “It can’t be that bad… I mean they wouldn’t recruit normal people like us for that…”

Steven: “Think about it… everyone on this airplane are skilled fighters with great physical form… none of us have any form of high education or knowledge….”

Peter: “So you think we will be fighting Kaiju?”

Steven: “It is possible”

Thomas: “How is that possible…? I mean we are so small and the Kaiju are so big…”

Steven: “I got no idea… but since they are recruiting us they probably have an idea for how to fight them….”

Peter: “Well I guess if we are going to fight… I supposed a good sleep would be in order…”

Steven: “Probably…”

After talking to Steven they all sat back in their seats, while the airplane was going through turbulence. They looked into the ceiling of the Hercules seeing all the wires and chains hanging from it while it was shaking from side to side. They all went to sleep trying to prepare for whatever was going to happen when they would arrive at the Shatterdome. After flying for almost four hours the airplane was descending towards the runway of the Shatterdome and the Lieutenant woke them all up in their seats while you could hear that the weather outside was quite bad, afterall the winter was coming and they were in Alaska. They landed safely on the runway and the Hercules drove down the runway and into the hangar where it stopped in its tracks and the large door opened. Peter and Thomas walked outside together with Steven in excitement looking around for anything interesting, but the only thing they found was a single man wearing a black suit standing in the middle of the hangar together with a young woman holding a clipboard.

Pentacost: “Gentlemen, I am Marshall Pentacost and I will be escorting you to the Shatterdome together with my secretary whom will be helping you with anything you need when we arrive… I will be briefing you while we are walking there so let’s go”

There were 19 recruits in all, including Peter, Thomas and Steven. They were all tired after the long flight, but they listened intently while they began walking out of the hangar and into the long walkway towards the Shatterdome. While walking the secretary was walking in the rear of the group while scribbling down notes. Pentacost began to brief them as they walked.

Pentacost: “You have all been assigned to the Jaeger Program for your unique set of skills… either you have a brother, you know each other very well or you’re simply drift compatible…”

Steven: “What do you mean by drift compatibility?”

Pentacost: “Mr. Steven I will come to that later… anyways the Jaeger Program was established after the fourth attack, it is a military operation driven by the entire world, they have all pulled their resources together to make this program work…”

Peter: “Mind getting to the interesting part?”

Pentacost: “You need all the information about us… and you better start behaving or I will send you back to the rat hole in Vancouver….. when the Jaeger Program was established it was because we needed a new weapon, to fight these monsters we are creating monsters of our own…”

Thomas: “Monsters…”

Pentacost: “The Jaeger Program is simply the creation of enormous humanoid robots… we need pilots to drive them and so we recruited you… the robots are driven either by a single nuclear reactor or a giant electrical storage within them…”

Peter: “Robots… so you have built 19 giant humanoid robots?”

Pentacost: “No we have not… we have only constructed 9 Jaegers… we need two pilots to control a single Jaeger, this is due to the fact that the Jaeger is driven by your brains…. Your brain will be connected with the robot so it does exactly what your own body does and each Jaeger has a unique set of skills and power…”

Peter: “I see where you are going… but I still don’t understand why you need two pilots for one Jaeger…”

Pentacost: “One Jaeger is at minimum 100 meters tall and weighs several thousand tons… the neural load to interface with the Jaeger have been tested and it has been proved to be too difficult for a single pilot to control it…. That is why a two pilot system have been implemented; we call it left and right hemisphere pilot control….”

Thomas: “Alright so you need two pilots to control a single Jaeger, but what about the two pilots...?”

Pentacost: “The two pilots minds will also be connected meaning each pilot will control either the left or right side of the Jaeger, and the pilots minds will be connected so that they know exactly what they both think and therefore are more capable of fighting together… now the most compatible people for such a connection are usually either twins or people whom have known each other for many years…”

Thomas: “Seems rather interesting… difficult but interesting…”

Pentacost: “Indeed Thomas… but the Jaegers are only as good as their pilots, this being said we chose you all because of your fighting skills since the Kaiju fight with their bare limbs so you will most likely face them in close combat and thus if you have good fighting skills you have a greater chance of winning…”

The group stopped for a brief moment outside a giant steel door, where Marshall Pentacost turned around to look at the entire group. He looked rather happy to have the recruits here, since he had a small smile on his face, yet his eyes were completely serious. He looked at his secretary once and she walked away through another door while Pentacost cleared his throat before continuing the briefing.

Pentacost: "Gentlemen… you will now be entering the Shatterdome, here you will find all the Jaegers that has been constructed, later this evening you will be assigned to a specific Jaeger that you and your twin or partner or partners will be working with for the remainder of your carrier”

Steven: “Great then I’ll be working with my dad…”

Pentacost: “Alright let’s proceed to enter the Shatterdome to take a look at the Jaegers… I will only let you look at them and tell them their names… when you are assigned to a Jaeger you will be briefed about its abilities before you will be testing it”

The giant steel door opened slowly in front of the recruits and Pentacost. It revealed an enormous room where the roof was several hundred meters above them, and in front of them thousands of people ran around working incredible hard to make sure everything was going as planned while preparing the Jaegers for work. Pentacost and the recruits began walking in a straight line down through the giant hangar looking left and right on each and every single Jaeger, they were magnificent creations capable of giving the military a fighting chance against the Kaiju.

Pentacost: “Before you, you see the Jaegers… Cherno Alpha a Russian Jaeger transported to this location, Coyote Tango the oldest of all the Jaegers, Crimson Typhoon a triple handed Jaeger needing three pilots, Gipsy Danger an old gunslinger with plasma cannons, Horizon Brave a mighty Jaeger with great speed and strength in its legs, Romeo Blue the perfect fighter in the water, Striker Eureka the newest and most powerful of the Jaegers holding several missiles capable of taking down a category four Kaiju, Tacit Ronin is a fast Jaeger which wields katana like weapons and finally Vulcan Specter with its own unique fire based weaponry… these are the fully operational Jaegers and we will continue to further develop and built new Jaegers and recruit more people to expand so we in the end can protect the entire world”

Steven: “I’m impressed… how much did you spend on these things…”

Pentacost: “One hundred billion dollars”

Steven: “That is not so much compared to what I though….”

Pentacost: “I don’t think you understand… it was one hundred billion dollars per Jaeger…”

Thomas: “Holy mother of god that is one hell of a lot of money you spend on this… you sure it will work?”

Pentacost: “Yes I am and so does the world… now you have seen the Jaegers and you will proceed directly to the conference room where you will be assigned to your own Jaeger... we have not tested the Jaegers against the Kaiju as of yet, we still resort to the Nuclear missiles, but hopefully after your training, which will begin tomorrow, you will become an elite force to stop the Kaiju…”

Peter: “This job is more interesting than I thought…. how long do we have to train?”

Pentacost: “We expect to have another Kaiju attack within the week and we wish to stop the Kaiju with the Jaeger this time… this means you have at most a week…”

Thomas: “So we have a week to get ready for combat…. How do we train?”

Pentacost: “You will be training in a simulator specially designed for each and every one of you… but first thing tomorrow you will begin your neural load experiments and connect to each other’s brains and the Jaeger to strengthen your abilities”

Thomas: “Seems good enough for me… shall we continue into the conference room everyone?”

Pentacost: “I think that would be a good idea… my secretary will assign the pilots to the Jaegers there… I will see you tomorrow”

Marshall Pentacost walked off quickly in the opposite direction towards his office, maneuvering around the thousands of people who work there. The group of recruits stood in the large hangar for a moment looking at the different Jaegers wondering which one they would be assigned to, before they were interrupted by a single marine. This marine led the group of 19 recruits up several metal stairs towards the conference room, going through large steel doors and when arriving at the conference room, they walked into a large room filled with images of Jaegers, Kaiju and a large blackboard. There they were all situated in a chair in front of a large table where Pentacost’s secretary was waiting for them. Peter, Thomas and Steven sat in the front row awaiting the beginning of their briefing in the room.

Secretary: “Alright gentlemen it is time for you all to be assigned to your Jaegers… you have all been analyzed throughout your few hours here…. We also took the liberty of reading and collection information about all of you from the different governments…. I will now write down all the Jaegers on the blackboard and write the names of the pilots out from the Jaeger…”

Peter: “Alright we got Coyote Alpha my man!!!”

Thomas: “Yea that one is probably a real badass…hehe like all the others”

Peter: “Right… anyways Ms. Secretary, can we have information on the Jaeger?”

Secretary: “Of course, I will hand out information on all the Jaegers to their respective pilots”

She began handing out all the papers on the different Jaegers to their respective pilots while the entire group looked at each other and wondering about the Jaegers abilities and how they could comprehend for their own weaknesses, though they did not speak with each other only their own co-pilot.

Peter: “So this is Coyote Tango… hm… it looks very strong…”

Thomas: “It has large retractable blades…. Plasma cannon on its shoulder…. Pulse reactors and rockets on arms, legs and back…. Impressive….”

Peter: “I believe we are going to enjoy being in Coyote Tango…”

Frank: “Hey Peter I was told by Steven that you seemed like a nice guy and so is your brother… I hope we can be a good team in the field when we are done training”

Peter: “Sure thing, but I believe he have to see what is going to happen tomorrow and I want to sleep now since it’s been a long day…”

Frank: “Well everyone is going to bed… so we will see each other tomorrow”

After the briefing, finding out which Jaeger was theirs and the little small talk everyone had, trying to get to know each other. Everyone scattered out leaving either for something to eat, drink or study, while Peter and Thomas went back to their own cabins and went to sleep. They wondered how it was going to feel being inside a Jaeger, how it would be to actually be inside each other’s heads and wondered how it was going to feel when they could actually fight back against the Kaiju.
