So yesterday I finished the manga Oyasumi Punpun (Goodnight Punpun) and I must say, it messed me up a little bit. It had a depressing atmosphere from the very beginning, but I didn't expect it to turn out to be so depressing in some of the final chapters. I had a feeling I knew what would happen, and I was mostly right, but watching things unravel was a little...painful. Great manga though.

Has anyone here read it? What are your thoughts?

Oyasumi Punpun follows the life and experiences of Onodera Punpun, a young boy living in Japan, as well as a few of his friends. The manga follows Punpun as he grows up, splitting the book into around 4 stages of his life: Elementary school, Middle school, High school, and his early 20s. (wikipedia)

Punpun is an ordinary young boy growing up in Japan whose age of innocence has reached its end after his father is arrested for spousal abuse and putting his mother in the hospital. With his uncle looking after him, Punpun grows into adulthood facing a series of events which change him, for better or worse, forcing him to contemplate just what it means to be an adult. Thanks. I may check it out, but I'm not too into depressing mangas.

Read it left me in a mildly saddening state for a few days. The best Inio Asano work and representation of punpun as a bird was 10/10.
It is the go to tragic+grim Sol.

It's pretty depressing, ngl. It is a little chaotic in the way the story is told as well, and there are a lot of strange things. It's unique, and really well-written in case you do check it out, though.

Yeah I really enjoyed the crudely-drawn wingless bird forms his family took. At first I thought it was weird, but I started to appreciate it. Also thought it was interesting how Punpun would change into different forms as things got better/worse in his life

Well it is quite depressing and one can even call it depressingly beautiful.

Same here it felt little weird at start but as soon as Asano use to convey his emotions it becomes amazing. Aiko life did really sadden me she had no hope her stepmother and such bleak outlook was too much.
What was more perplexing is at the end I strangely felt no empathy for characters as it was so grim just a bit sadness and emptiness, it was a very good ride and a really good manga.

True Asano, Nijigahara Holograph is on my reading list now it's by Asano slightly less depressing but much more complex.

Aiko was tragic, and I would have to wait some time to read another work by Asano haha
