Momoshiki claiming to be a god sounded more like arrogance than anything else, but when I think about it they may really have "divine" origins
When you look at the death reaper it has Otsutsuki features
When you look at the Rinnegan it can defy the god of the underworld
Rinnegan being able to control the king of underworld suggests to me that either Hagoromo is hella OP or someone had him under Rinnegan genjutsu since before Kaguya ate the fruit.
I think it's the latter because Hagoromo is not the kind to bend someone's will let alone fight against death. I don't think Otsutsuki are gods in the traditional sense but they may be descendants of actual ones.
Uzumaki were able to control reapers
Tobirama was able to summon the dead
Uchiha can cheat death
To me that suggests the Otsutsuki blood has some type of connection to the forces of the after life, BUT not because of Hagoromo primarily.
The Sage's power comes from Kaguya but where does Kaguya's power come from ? Where does Susanoo come from ? Where does the Juubi come from ?
I think Boruto arc will reveal this eventually or maybe not, maybe this arc is just a bridge to a new one where we might find out about the Otsutsuki's history.
It could be that being keepers of the Shinju may have been a duty given to Otsutsuki by their ancestors who were the real "gods" of NV. Kaguya escaping could have been because the clan strayed from their duty and got greedy for power.
