I thought long and hard on the possibilities of whom Tobi was. I enjoyed it being Obito after all but to this day think Kishimoto could have gone in all other kinds of directions with him as well. Obito was my first thought and I kept that belief for a while with all the foreshadowing, but then began to think it may have been too obvious due to how long Tobi's identity had been kept under raps. I started thinking of so many possibilities. Some possibly foreshadowed and logical while others complete crack. Characters that were still mysterious but bore similarities to him as well as the knowledge of characters and clans he possessed. Of course there are several flaws to these. I'll leave a poll.
1) Fugaku
-My Aizen instinct kind of kicked in here and it seemed to make sense. It would parallel Naruto's father being a savior while Sasuke's would be a destroyer. Itachi and Sasuke were able to unlock MS so why couldn't their father, who was seemingly the leader of the Uchiha clan or at least the chief of the Konoha police force and created the coup. What if he cast a genjutsu like Itachi's or Shisui's to make Itachi think he killed him but was actually the one who helped him? His obsession with making Sasuke his ally and developing his eyes was suspicious as well.
2) Uchiha Ancestor (Indra)
-His spiral rinnegan reminded me of Kamui and Tobi's mask and considering he was the sire of the Uchiha and antagonized Ashura, it would make sense he would have powers so great that they would allow him to either survive for a long time or possibly travel forward in time. Kamui bending space and time also supported this.
3) Shisui
-Tobi knew of Shisui's Koto Amatsukami and coveted his eyes. Furthermore, Shisui's body was nowhere to be found, further supporting that he may have survived and garnered vengeance against Konoha and Danzou for what happened.
4) Itachi
-It was a stretch, but I began to wonder if it was possible that Itachi from an alternate reality may have been Tobi. His near unrivaled intellect, skills and powers seemed to fit for any criminal mastermind. What if something different had happened in his timeline such as he allowing the coup and the whole shinobi world crumbling as a result and the world left in ruin
5) Kakashi
-Along with Obito, I began to wonder if an alternate reality Kakashi was the man behind the mask. What if something had gone down differently in his time as well. Something that made him harbor revenge for his dad, for Rin or something else. He was also aware of Kakashi's kamui and stated it wouldn't work on him.
6) Hashirama
-An alternate reality Hashirama was a bit crack, but what if he too had done something differently? What he decided to not give the bijuus away and instead ruled the world with an iron fist, which caused most of the world ruin. He also had an almost complete clone of him.
7) Hiruzen
-Prime Hiruzen was stated to be not only the strongest kage of his time, but of all the hokages. He was also the professor hokage who learned all the jutsus of Konoha. What if an younger, alternate reality version of him took a similar route as Orochimaru? His knowledge of Danzou and the elders seemed to support this as well.
8) Jiraiya
-Some if I remember wanted Jiraiya to pull an Aizen and to have been Tobi the whole time, but it just didn't add up for me lols. Doing so would have been liking spitting on his own character to me and just wouldn't have made sense considering the circumstances of his fight with Pein. Then I got to thinking of the alternate reality thing again lols. What if in that, Jiraiya had taken Orochimaru's path while Orochimaru took his path?
9) Naruto or Sasuke from the future or alternate reality
-I know this theory became popular and controversial. Some thought it was awesome while others thought it was completely ridiculous. However, I honestly though it fit fairly well. Tobi clearly was knowledeable of them both, feared Itachi, became timid of Naruto, refused to let Sasuke go to Konoha when he wanted, took on a silly alias just like Naruto, wanted the two to fight, wanted to devlop Sasuke's power, etc. He also seemed fixated on Naruto and was shaken a bit by his ideals and Akatsuki defeats. What if one or the other failed to save the world and wished to change that by going back in time or going to an alternate reality where it was still possible to save it.
