Legacy of Hatred

The skies grew darker as the ground was almost completely covered in blood. The Third Shinobi World War raged on with no end in sight. Konoha's ninja were of the strongest involved in the war, however, their numbers were drastically decreasing and fast. "We need back-up!" shouted a leaf jonin. A leaf chunin responded, "We're all we got out here!" An enemy squad approached them. "Fire Style! Fireball jutsu!" The chunin yelled, taking out two of the four approaching ninja.
"On your left!" The jonin yelled as one of the neutralized ninja was just a substitution. It was too late. The Chunin only had enough time to see the face of his killer before he fell. "Damn..." the jonin thought dashing further into the battlefield.
He reached the center of the action and began taking out enemies alongside his leaf comrades. "Where's our back-up?" another jonin asked. He responded to his dismay, "We're all that's left; jonin, chunin, and even genin." "Damn!" another added throwing two shuriken, "I thought the Uchiha were coming with a squad to back us up here?!" "Apparently", the first jonin said, breaking an enemies neck, "the situation has changed. Maybe they got tied up somewhere else." "Of course." a third jonin commented.
The situation on the Konoha's border was getting more and more hopeless. They became desperate. The commanding jonin on the border issued a shocking order. His subordinates who weren't fighting all glared at him with looks of disdain. "You heard me! Relay the message and make it happen!" A squad of 2 jonin and three chunin headed back to the command squad to relay the command.
Only a handful of enemy ninja made it inside the walls. Their numbers were so little that no real damage was done. There were about twelve of them that had been quickly dispatched by three elite Uchiha clan members. "The battle is slowly but surely leaking into the village", the oldest Uchiha said to the younger two. The youngest one, a female, commented, "The situation at the border must be bad if twelve enemies can slip past." "Maybe." The eldest added. "It'll be fine." the youngest male said deactivating his fully matured sharingan. "What makes you say that?" the female asked. "I heard the Yellow Flash was en route to the border after he finishes cleaning up the mess as his area." The eldest Uchiha sighed, "Great, lets hope that happens soon."
Two leaf ninja frantically burst through the gate and met the three Uchiha. "You two," the eldest Uchiha noted, "you're from the command squad. What's the situation?" After catching their breath they said, "Not good sir! We're losing numbers fast, just barely holding them off!" "So...?" One shinobi looked at the other gulping. He took a deep breath and said, "The commanding jonin has requested 'all hands on deck!'" The three Uchihas eyes became wide. The second command shinobi became intimidated by the look of their Sharingan. "You mean--" "Yes sir! Every capable leaf shinobi must report to the border!"
The female Uchiha interjected, "I thought the Yellow Flash was on the way there?!" The command shinobi shook his head, "Not so! Apparently he's completely tied up at the Kannabi Bridge!" The Uchiha grunted. The elder said, "So who specifically?" "His exact words were," the command shinobi stated, "if they're old enough to hold a kunai, have them report! No excuses!" The command shinobi departed.
The three Uchiha looked at each other. "Let's spread the message." said the elder. They hesitatingly dashed off in different directions of the village.
The eldest Uchiha returned the Uchiha's estate. He saw a promising child playing with his aunt and uncle. As he approached them with a look of despair, their spirits became to drown in sorrow. He asked to speak with the two elders in private, away from the onix-haired child. He looked on but could not hear the conversation. He just saw them talking with sad expressions.
The elder shinobi said something to his aunt and uncle that made them embrace each other and begin weeping. "Auntie, Uncle what's wrong?" He said. The innocence in his voice almost made the elder Uchiha puke from self-disgust. He slowly approached the young Uchiha and took his hand. The youth tried to pull away. He held him tighter. "It will be okay Itachi, just go with the nice man." His aunt said weeping uncontrollably. The elder and the youth left the estate.
"Let me explain something to you." the elder said stopping just outside the Uchiha estate. Itachi gave him respect and his attention, "We are at war. The village is at stake and we need as much help as we can get, even if that means children like you. I'm sorry." Itachi drew back, "No!" he yelled. The elder grabbed him, "I'm sorry!" He cast a genjutsu on him that would last the travel time until they reached the battlefield. Itachi passed out, the elder caught him and met up with the other two Uchihas who had gathered several children from four to seven.
"Ready to go?" the younger male said? The elder Uchiha nodded. Their group took off.
They reached the battlefield, however Itachi had not recovered from the genjutsu. "Damn it." the elder said. "Why'd you put him out?" the younger male asked. "He wouldn't come peacefully. It's not like I wanted to." "We're just following orders", the female Uchiha commented. They nodded and handed the children shuriken and kunai. "Look kids", the elder explained, "This is a dangerous place, if you give them the chance, they WILL kill you. Stay under cover and strike from the shadows, if you know any jutsu, use them wisely." He stood up straight up as the children nodded. He looked into the innocent eyes of each and everyone of them. "Let's go!" They fanned out, leaving Itachi where he was. He looked like dead body so he blended in.
Time passed. The battlefield was nothing but dead bodies, severed ligaments and blood. This battle was over, but another one was about to begin.
"Wh--where am I?" a young survivor muttered. The genjustu placed on Itachi wore off. When Itachi opened his eyes, he saw another person staring at him. His vision was still blurry. When it cleared he saw a cold lifeless pair of faded eyes staring at him. "Ah!" He screamed. As he jumped at and backed away, he tripped and fell. "What was that!?" He saw another body, a female Uchiha. Itachi shrieked as he surveyed the ground around him, studded with corpses.
He ran in a random direction jumping over bodies of leaf and enemy shinobi. He tripped again. This time over a lighter body. "What's going on?!" He screamed to the sky as he laid on his back facing upward. "I'm dead" he thought, "and this is hell." He looked to the right and saw the dead body of female leaf child. This girl was someone he saw almost daily who came to deliver fruit to the Uchiha estate. She would smile at him and giggle, and he would blush.
Itachi stroked her face. "She's cold..." he said. He looked at his hands, stained with blood and reeking of flesh. His eyes became dark and hopeless. Looking to the left he saw the Uchiha elder who brought him here. One eye, sharingan activated, the other eye with a kunai in it. Itachi stood up and looked at the entire battlefield, seeing only more of the same.
Dead bodies. Shuriken and kunai gashed into lifeless corpses, some split in half. He then looked into the sky. He felt alone. The only thing looking back at him was the moon as even the stars had hidden from chaos. The sky was black. Tears began gushing from his eyes as he cried to no ear. The tears from his eyes and mucus from his nose ran down his face, off his chin, or into his mouth and out with drool.
All of a sudden, a strange taste entered his mouth. A taste, resembling that of iron. He wiped his face. His blood was on his hands. He knew it was his blood and not from one of the dead corpses, because the warmth from the blood was the only warmth he felt. He traced the blood back up to his eyes and wiped them clean.
When his vision was clear again, it changed. He could see the chakra in his hands flowing violently with his rushing blood. The four year-old observed the lifeless bodies and saw no chakra. He looked in a complete circle until he noticed faint and fading chakra in the distance. He ran to it.
"Are you alright?" He said to a dying female shinobi of the leaf. "I'll get help!" The female grabbed him as he ran away, "No." she said gently bringing him close to her. "I'm done for." Itachi cried more, his tears became blood. The dying ninja looked at the youth's eyes: red with one tomoe in each, "Oh...you're one of them...with those eyes." Itachi stared. "Yeah..." she said coughing up copious amounts of blood, "You're one of those...Uchihas. Put those eyes to good use, kid." Those were here last words. Her hands became heavy in Itachi's hands. He led them gently to the ground.
Itachi stood up, his eyes returned to normal, not to activate again for another four years. He could barely walk, but he was able to limp back to the village. On that day, something powerful happened to Itachi, but that same thing would become his greatest trial in time.
