Orochimaru's True Motives
And some analysis of his character structure
So one detail I found interesting recently is Orochimaru's willingness to help Sasuke follow his "path". Since then I have been wondering what his true motives were. I then looked at the clues and facts that we are given...
1. Once revived by Sasuke, Orochimaru states outright that he is only interested in Sasuke's body. (Of course
) Then states he is not strong enough to take it, yet.
2. Orochimaru realizes that Sasuke has his own free will now, having been purged from Sasuke's mind/body by Itachi + Itachi's TNJ. Oro can no longer use the curse mark to readily transfer into Sasuke's body.
3. Oro has been watching Sasuke from Anko's curse seal, and probably from Jugo's seal as well.
4. Oro freed Sasuke from Obito/Madara Zetsu.
5. Oro realizes Sasuke's jealousy and deep rivalry with Naruto.
6. Oro thinks Sasuke has the ability to surpass Madara.
7. And he wants to see how far Sasuke will go.
8. Oro states that he "is not the enemy".
**Character evolution**
Humor. Oro is given humor & provides comedic relief?! Something usually reserved for "good" characters. We don't see Madara or Pain (when he was evil) being portrayed like this.
Oro, to Karin: "Are you annoyed that you were brought here far from Sasuke-kun?"
Some Suigetsu/Oro humor scenes...
Admitted he has changed (but how?!), saying "We [sannin] can't be monolith forever". Oro admitted to Tsunade that he has changed, and not in a sketchy way, but by making a rather profound statement:
**Conclusions**
So what can we say given all of this? I can come up with most likely explanations for Oro's strange behavior.
Theory 1: Same motive
Oro really just wants Sasuke's body, and he is simply letting him become stronger and stronger so that he can get the entire package once he takes over.
Theory 2: New motives
When pierced with the Tatsuka sword by Itachi in the Edo Tensei mode, some sort of Izanami or genjusu was layed on Oro. The reason is that by taking over Sasuke's body, Oro would be following a Kabuto-like path by using other people's power (i.e. Sasuke's EMS) and bodies. By recognizing his own identity, especially in episodes from his childhood/adolescence with the Third's team, he might indeed no longer have any interest in taking over Sasuke.
Another plus for this theory is the humor that has recently been added to Oro's character, kind of like the dry humor added to Itachi in Edo Tensei mode (when we realize he is actually good). Truly evil characters don't really have comedic relief like this. Could this be a hint?
Oro also also states that he "no longer wants to be the wind that makes the windmill move", but wants to see where Sasuke's path will take him. By this he could be also aknowledging Sasuke's power and ability to end the war. After all, Oro's goals (whatever they may be) will also vanish if Madara takes over.
So given all this evidence and possible theories, what do you think could be Oro's true motives?
Thank you very much for reading!
