I know the video game scene is filler but i thought it was said somewhere that Orochimaru challenged pain for his Rinnegan and got scraped. When he knew he couldn't get his hands on Rinnegan he joined the Akatsuki to try to get close to Itachi and steal his Sharigan. I could be wrong.
