Welcome and during the fight, Orochimaru said that Death reaper seal would have worked if he had been 10 years younger so I believe that in his prime, he wouldn't even have needed that :|

Hiruzen in his youth does NOT even need Death Reaper, he is just way more skilled than Oro. Oro admitted it, he could not defeat him in his prime, and he pretty much lost to him in his old age.

Hiruzen's technique was actually working in my opinion, it was only because the sword hit him he could'nt finish him, but well thats just my opinion.
