Originally, Orochimaru was a tall man with extremely pale skin and waist-length black hair. He had a long face with pronounced cheekbones, golden eyes with slits in his pupils and purple markings around his eyes — a reference to his snake-like nature. Although he has taken on new bodies repeatedly, he has modified them each to resemble his original form, minus the height differences. He apparently used his Vanishing Facial Copy Technique on his original body so he can wear it over his hosts' faces as a mask.

Orochimaru possesses a complex personality, but more often than not, however, he was often described as twisted by a large number of people, including Tsunade. Jiraiya speculated that this was due to the fact that both of his parents died when he was at a very young age, along with his horror for Tsunade losing Nawaki and later shedding tears when she lost Dan, imply that Orochimaru grew to disdain the fragility of human life and how it affected those still living, which led him to desire immortality. To that end, the primary purpose of Orochimaru's human experimentation is to test what modifications the human body can endure and harness a subject's unique abilities for himself. Once accomplishing this goal, Orochimaru had hoped to be worthy of the title of "ultimate being", unable to die and able to achieve his secondary goal to learn every ninja technique in the world, which would normally take many lifetimes to obtain.

Description: An empowered state of body achieved by blending natural energy with one’s physical and spiritual energy. The mode heightens performance on all levels by adding a new dimension of power to the user’s chakra. The state is a direct result of Senjutsu chakra circulating through the body. To enter this form, a minimum of 10% of the user’s maximum chakra reserve must be moulded into Senjutsu chakra, all subsequent technique employ Senjutsu chakra until the minimum cost (-10/turn) cannot be paid to sustain the mode. The user is immune to certain (C-rank and below) damage (unless externally empowered to increase lethality) and can heal (for 10 damage per turn for B rank and below damage), for the duration of this technique. The user is able to passively sense chakra and his/her perception and reflexes are enhanced. Their ninjutsu and strength increases, empowering taijutsu and other close range physical combat techniques by +30. Additionally, the user is able to break out of Genjutsu, using Genjutsu release technique one rank lower than what he would normally be required to. And similarly, the requirement to break out of user’s Genjutsu using Release or Chakra surge is one rank higher than required. Lastly, the user gains access to snake anatomy, Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation and other physical feats granted by Sage mode.

Description: The Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation is a forbidden technique used to revive the dead. To perform this technique, the user must first acquire some of the DNA of the person they intend to revive such as limbs, organs or merely blood samples. The soul of the intended revived must also reside in the pure world (jōdo) those whose soul has been consumed by the Death God, or have been previously sealed by other methods cannot be resurrected. Next, a living sacrifice is required for the soul of the resurrected to use as a vessel. Once all prerequisites for the technique have been met, the acquired DNA of the person is smeared on a special scroll and once the scroll is activated, the remains spread out in the form of a special seal with the living sacrifice in the centre. Then dust and ash encase the sacrifice's body, giving them the same appearance that the revived had at the time of their death. The person is then revived and the end product is usually stored in a casket until summoned by the user by performing the Tiger → Snake → Dog → Dragon → Clap hands handseals. When the user summons the revived soul, a casket first appears before revealing the revived soul. The Edo Tensei Summoning can be countered by sealing away the targets soul or by having the summoner cancel the technique. As they are unlikely to do this voluntarily, using a genjutsu to trick them into cancelling the technique is ideal. The sequence of hand seals for cancelling the technique is Rat → Ox → Monkey → Tiger → Dragon → Boar and saying Kai. If the summoner dies before the technique is deactivated, then this method is impossible. If the summoned soul's controlling tag is overcome or disabled by a technique or if the user so wishes it, the summoned soul or the user can both sever the contract through the use of the Snake → Ram → Boar → Dog → Tiger seals. The summoned soul is then left as an immortal revived soul, autonomous and without any link to the summoner.

The arms drag him into the coffin and take him to the netherworld, a dimension separate from reality and which can only be escaped from via Space/Time techniques.

Description: Orochimaru uses this technique to possess his vessels and gain control of them. If the process is successfully accomplished, it cannot be reversed. The target becomes Orochimaru's vessel and he can use any and every single one of the vessels own abilities, such as KG and special elements. This technique, however, requires Orochimaru to transform into his White Snake form beforehand and to have defeated his enemy or at least weaken him. Any and every injury Orochimaru may have suffered beforehand are healed upon possessing the new vessel. To perform this technique, Orochimaru reveals his true form: The Power of The Whiete Snake (a gigantic white snake composed of smaller white snakes), abandoning his current host's body. Orochimaru then swallows the new host and takes him or her to a separate, mental plane where he envelops the mind of his victim. The snake body then dies and falls apart, and Orochimaru's soul dominates the body. The souls of the hosts are kept within Orochimaru, leaving them "still alive", in a sense (albeit suppressed), and when Orochimaru switches hosts, the souls leave with him. It was noted that if the target isn't weakened beforehand, it can still use some techniques to reverse or stop the process. This is most noticeable in Sharingan bios, which can only be effectively possessed if severely weakened before the ritual. Upon completion of the ritual, the vessel body takes use of Orochimaru's regeneration abilities and heals any injury it might have at that time, even if at the brink of death. Orochimaru then uses his abilities to change the appearance of his body and face to match his own original appearance.

Description: Orochimaru will reveal his true self by exiting his body and revealing himself as a very big white snake. This white snake has a body made of what appear to be several other smaller white snakes and a head reminiscent of Orochimaru's original human head. However, due to the transformation, this head is much reptilian in features and must bigger. While on this form, Orochimaru's bites possess a paralyzing poison and his blood quickly disperses in the air if he is injured, bestowing the same effect. In this form, physical damage is not enough to kill him as he can simply reform by growing more snakes to form his body. The easiest way to defeat him in this form is to seal him or to cut his head off completely. In addition to being virtually immune to physical damage in this form, Orochimaru can use the snakes that compose his body to produce physical attacks with a mid-range radius that possess a physical damage of A-Rank level (counts as a move). While in this form, Orochimaru cannot weave handseals but can use elemental techniques from his mouth (if they don't require handseals and can be released from it). His speed in this form is drastically increased but his mobility and agility are not. The user must be in this form to leave his body and possess a new one through the living reincarnation technique. The risk of such a form is that if Orochimaru fails to defeat his enemy, he will be left without his former vessel as once Orochimaru exists his vessel, he cannot return to it.

Description: This is Orochimaru's greatest and strongest technique. Using the "power of reincarnation" possessed by the White Snake as an intermediary, he can transform into a giant white serpent with eight heads and eight tails (similar to rock/bone). The serpent boasts a giant body, even larger than that of Manda, who was feared as the "strongest colossal serpent". Just by crawling on the scales of its abdomen it was able to trample the Uchiha hideout, and can destroy most things without difficulty. When using this technique, Orochimaru can emerge from the mouth of one of the heads and use his Kusanagi Sword to attack. This form leaves Orochimaru immune to ninjutsu up to A-Rank and able to take up to 3 S-Ranks without damage. He cannot, however, use Elemental Ninjutsu or Genjutsu while on this form. He can only use the 8 heads to attack the enemy through physical blows and bites. The bites are poisonous and can paralyze anything they injure. Each head can be used to deliver an S-Rank physical attack up to Long range and he can use up to 3 at the same time in one attack.

Description: This is Orochimaru's greatest and strongest technique. Using the "power of reincarnation" possessed by the White Snake as an intermediary, he can transform into a giant white serpent with eight heads and eight tails (similar to rock/bone). The serpent boasts a giant body, even larger than that of Manda, who was feared as the "strongest colossal serpent". Just by crawling on the scales of its abdomen it was able to trample the Uchiha hideout, and can destroy most things without difficulty. When using this technique, Orochimaru can emerge from the mouth of one of the heads and use his Kusanagi Sword to attack. This form leaves Orochimaru immune to ninjutsu up to A-Rank and able to take up to 3 S-Ranks without damage. He cannot, however, use Elemental Ninjutsu or Genjutsu while on this form. He can only use the 8 heads to attack the enemy through physical blows and bites. The bites are poisonous and can paralyze anything they injure. Each head can be used to deliver an S-Rank physical attack up to Long range and he can use up to 3 at the same time in one attack.

History:
For a while, since leaving Konoha, Orochimaru left his hometown alone until the chance to destroy it presented itself. The opportunity presented itself when he forms a partnership with the Fourth Kazekage of Sunagakure, who desired Konoha's destruction, planning their invasion during the Chūnin Exams.
Orochimaru also used the invasion as an opportunity to test Sasuke Uchiha, Itachi's younger brother, if he can be of use as a vessel. Prior to the commencement of the second part of the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru murdered a team of Kusagakure genin to impersonate its leader Shiore and infiltrate the Forest of Death. Using a snake summon to separates Naruto from Team 7, the disguised Orochimaru subjected Sasuke to his Killing Intent with the youth unable to fight due to the fear instilled into him. However, the fear subsided with Naruto's timely appearance and convincing Sasuke to muster his courage before Orochimaru interferes with the jinchūriki's seal while knocking him out for the duration of the fight. After being subjected to Sasuke's Dragon Fire Technique as it partially burned off his disguise, Orochimaru expresses pride in Sasuke's abilities before branding his target with his Cursed Seal of Heaven and taking his leave. As he sends Team Dosu as sacrificial lambs to test Sasuke, having Kabuto accompany Team 7 to witness Sasuke use the curse seal's power, Orochimaru is confronted by Anko as he tells her that the Konoha will continue the exams under threat of his retaliation if they cancel it.

During the fight, Orochimaru reveals to Hiruzen the fruits of his labour from mastering Living Corpse Reincarnation with the host body he took after his brush-in with Itachi and his intention to make Sasuke into his next host. Horrified on how far Orochimaru has truly went, with both his age and the regenerative abilities of the two first Hokage placing him in a grand disadvantage, Hiruzen resolves to stop Orochimaru with the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, sealing away the souls of the two Hokage prior to going after Orochimaru himself. Not wishing to join the three Hokages' souls in being trapped within the Reaper's stomach, Orochimaru stabbed Hiruzen through the back of his chest with his Sword of Kusanagi before the weakened Hiruzen resolves to only seal the part of Orochimaru's soul within his arms. Cursing the dying Hiruzen for robbing him of his use of ninjutsu, Orochimaru is carried off by the Sound Four with the invasion halted. Afterwards, Sunagakure broke ties with Orochimaru upon discovering the corpse of the Fourth Kazekage.

Seeing this and seeing a potential threat, Orochimaru resolves to kill Naruto before Tsunade teams up with Jiraiya to face their former teammate. Despite summoning Manda, managing to hide his condition from the giant serpent as he fights Gamabunta, Orochimaru is forced to give up healing his arms and just take a new host body.

Two and a half years later, Yamato-led Team Kakashi, hoping to find Sasuke, learned of an opportunity from a dying Sasori that he was meeting with his spy, Kabuto. Posing as Sasori within his Hiruko puppet, the group's temporary leader Yamato meets with Kabuto while the others watch. However, Orochimaru arrives as Kabuto destroys the Hiruko, Orochimaru clarifying to a confused Kabuto that Sasori never came as the rest of Team Kakashi reveal themselves to fight the two ninja. Although he was surprised to see Yamato has survived his experiments involving Hashirama's DNA, Orochimaru was more interested to see if Naruto has become as strong as "his Sasuke". As Naruto assumes his three-tailed form in response, Orochimaru is able to elude Naruto, finding the battle extremely enjoyable while provoking Naruto further. It was only after Naruto submitted to Kurama's influence and entered his mindless four-tailed form, Orochimaru took the fight more seriously due to both Naruto now able to kill him and his host body beginning to reject him after he used his Kusanagi to force Naruto away. While he briefly recuperated, Orochimaru was approached by Sai, who made an offer on behalf of Danzō to work together in destroying Konoha. Intrigued, Orochimaru and Kabuto took him back to their base. Later, after the rest of Team Kakashi arrived at the lair and Sai teamed up with them, Orochimaru confronted Sai and Naruto to question Sai about his loyalties. He fled before he could be drawn into another fight, and later kept Sasuke from killing the team, noting that they might kill another Akatsuki member like they had done with Sasori.
In the anime, sensing that the time was close approaching to change vessels, Orochimaru sent Kabuto to find Guren, so that she could help with preparations for the process. During this time, Orochimaru was also experimenting on a child named Yūkimaru, with unusual powers. Orochimaru eventually decided it was time to test Sasuke's abilities, and watched in awe as he defeated an army of ninja, without killing any, and without receiving a scratch. Noticing that Guren was watching, he offered her another chance to prove herself worthy as Orochimaru's next vessel, to which she was delighted. Orochimaru teamed her up with Yūkimaru, noting that their two abilities should work well together. Later, it was revealed that Orochimaru also chose Guren because he knew she would eventually grow attached to Yūkimaru, which he appeared to have a use for. He ordered Kabuto to be ready to eliminate her should she betray him.
Later, after receiving word that the Konoha shinobi were complicating things, Orochimaru decided he might have to intervene personally. Later, after Yūkimaru lost his abilities and Guren supposedly died, Kabuto reported back to his master about the failed operation. Orochimaru dismissed it as nothing more than a minor setback, saying once he had Sasuke's body, it wouldn't make any difference.
On the verge of being rejected by his current body, Orochimaru contemplated how best to take Sasuke's body. Also, in the anime only, he and Kabuto recapped all the events that led to Sasuke defecting, and how much he had improved since. Before he could formulate his plan, Sasuke attacks him, having decided that Orochimaru was unworthy of having an Uchiha's body, and tries to kill him with Chidori Sharp Spear, but only succeeds in piercing his arm. Orochimaru proceeded to reveal his true body, a large white snake made of a multitude of smaller snakes, in order to initiate the body-switch process. Sasuke however cuts up Orochimaru's large snake body, only to realise that the vaporising blood is turning into a poison and Orochimaru successfully starts the body-switch process. Sasuke however stops the process like Itachi had done years earlier, but took it a step further by turning the switch against Orochimaru, absorbing him into his own body. Sasuke gained access to some of Orochimaru's abilities, but at the same time had to dedicate some of his chakra to suppressing Orochimaru. During his battle with Itachi, Sasuke ran out of chakra, and Orochimaru was able to emerge through his signature Eight Branches Technique. He marvelled at the fact that he would finally have the chance to take Sasuke's body, but was immediately pierced through by Itachi's Susanoo. At first Orochimaru boasted that it would take more than that to kill him, but he suddenly realised something was wrong and that he was pierced by the Totsuka Sword that he himself had been searching for. Orochimaru was then sealed away by Itachi's Susanoo, as well as removing the cursed seal from Sasuke. A single white snake escaped from Susanoo, but was later killed by Amaterasu's black flames.
Following Kabuto's defeat, and his reunion with Suigetsu Hōzuki and Jūgo, Sasuke learns of the scroll they found at one of Orochimaru's hideouts and resolves to revive him for answers following what he learned from Itachi. Sasuke succeeds in reviving Orochimaru by pulling his consciousness out of Anko's cursed seal and transferring it into the physical form Jūgo provided by absorbing some of Kabuto's modified flesh. Despite Suigetsu's fears of his next action as he reclaims the rest of his chakra that Kabuto took from him, Orochimaru explains that he is neither interested in Tobi's war nor strong enough to even attempt to take Sasuke's body if he wanted to. Ordering Suigetsu and Jūgo hold two of the Zetsu down, the remaining four Zetsu are used as the bodies for the reincarnation of the previous four Hokage. When Hiruzen asks him after why he changed his mind after all these years, Orochimaru explains that he made an error in judgement from watching Kabuto act in his stead and is now interested to see the result of Sasuke's "different path" of not letting those who sacrificed themselves for the village go to waste. As Obito began the final stages of his and Madara's grand plan: "Infinite Tsukuyomi", Hashirama had Ino Yamanaka telepathically link everyone via the Mind Body Transmission Technique to inform everyone about the plan as well as try and rally the shinobi to continue fighting. Later, Orochimaru, along with the five Kage, Suigetsu, and Karin, arrive at the battlefield, where the entire Allied Shinobi Forces are struggling against Obito Uchiha, who recently became the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails. As Obito began the final stages of his and Madara's grand plan: "Infinite Tsukuyomi", Hashirama had Ino Yamanaka telepathically link everyone via the Mind Body Transmission Technique to inform everyone about the plan as well as try and rally the shinobi to continue fighting. While Hashirama's words fail to inspire them, Naruto's memories are conveyed to them via Ino's telepathy. The Sannin looked on solemnly as Naruto remembered the memorial he erected for Jiraiya.
As Sasuke had Jūgo transfer some of his natural energy into the Uchiha, who immediately channelled it into his complete Susanoo, Orochimaru watched on, greatly impressed at how far Sasuke has come and notes that he still had much room to grow.

Oro can perform the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation, having further refined the kinjutsu developed by Tobirama Senju he is capable of summoning 3 Edos at one time. Upon reviving the dead, he can implant them with special tags that erase their personalities, granting him complete control over their actions. During the Konoha Crush, Orochimaru revives the Second and First Hokage to fight his former teacher Hiruzen; the latter later seals away part of Orochimaru's soul within his arms, making him temporarily lose access to this technique. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Orochimaru uses the Shinigami Mask to spiritually restore himself, allowing him to use the technique once more. His prowess with it has increased, as he revives all four previous Hokage with nearly their full power and can use Hashirama's cells to strengthen his control.

Being a Snake himself, Orochimaru had mastered Snakes at a young age and is capable of summoning them forth with a few hand seals or simply swiping some blood on his Snake tattoo on his right arm. Other than Snakes, in his search for power, Orochimaru also gained the Bulls summoning scroll from an unknown source. Upon his left arm, he carries the Bulls tattoo.

Orochimaru has a seal on his left wrist which can be activated whenever he wants once inserting enough chakra through it. During his training in Fuuinjutsu, he has sealed various amounts of shurikens and kunai's and several wire strings with two fuma shuriken's in the seal along with a chokuto so when inserting enough chakra through it, Orochimaru can summon whatever he likes from the above, as long as he states it during battles. Orochimaru also has various seals on his body. From his wrist, to his chest, legs and mouth etc are covered with various sealing techniques for battle and other purposes. Using his Fuuinjutsu knowledge he forged the sealing script for the Kyōkai Kekkai no Jutsu on the armor piece of his chest so that he may activate it quicker. He has a seal with the Kanji for "Guard" on his upper arm, a Kanji with the seal for "Eternal", another with the Kanji for "Regain" on his right shoulder, and another with the Kanji Impervious on his body. On a part of his clothing is a talisman for his Ken'o technique, while on the wrist band of his clothing is the seal for a very special technique of his. The seal itself is placed onto a wrist band and it is a kanji line shaped like a pentagon with open circles placed at every point of the shape. Over the years of roaming the Ninja World Karna stumble upon many energy users and so the wrist band registered all. It glows purple for Keigoku, Green for Natural energy, White for spiritual energy and so on. On his chest is a general, sealing-assisted execution of the hard style martial arts exercise known as the ‘Iron Shirt seal. This seal (Hagane Hie no Ikkō) helps his already sturdy body's defense. All of his seals are infused with earth chakra to reinforce them and make them sturdier (via Scripture of the Templars).

The seals will now respect elemental strengths and weaknesses of the chosen element and will possess the strength of the chosen element up to their own rank. They will also be infused with 15 more chakra than normal and this chakra cost will be expended whenever the seals triggered or are activated. This technique doesn't make Fuuinjutsu techniques stronger or enhance them in any way, it simply makes the seals on the user's body/clothes/person harder to tamper with or destroy. If the seal's rank is boosted on activation, the strength of the sealing script will now reflect it's new rank.
Alternatively, this technique can be passively applied to seals created in battle rather than those already placed on the user's biography. By infusing one of the five basic elemental chakras into the seal, the user can enhance and fortify the sealing script in the same way as the seals applied to the user's bio. This immediate stress plus the spike in heart rate, will activate a small seal that is passively applied to the users chest. This seal further assists the flow of chakra, spreading it and adding a dense sort of chakra to flow around users muscles and body, strengthening it. These actions and chakra flow, combined with the user’s general physique and resistance to damage, can lessen the damage taken by the physical elements of an attack by 20 damage points. Description: This seal, Mayer's Band, was created by an Uzumaki prior to their village's destruction. The jutsu's purpose revolves around the ability to identify and seal foreign energy produced by the user's enemies. The seal itself is placed onto a wrist band and it is a kanji line shaped like a pentagon with open circles placed at every point of the shape. When foreign energy enters short range of the user, the circles on the wristband emit a bright colorful light signifying to the user that an energy different from the energies known to them has broken their perimeter. The sealing band cannot inform the user about the type of energy being used, but it can and does tell the difference between the various energies it comes across, and thus repeats the same color glows corresponding with that energy when met again. Once the energy is close enough the seal will release a special energy absorbing barrier around the user protecting them for that one attack before sealing the foreign energy into the wristband protecting the user. The jutsu is quite helpful for shinobi who don't have any energy sensing abilities, and its sealing effect only lasts a limited time. After sealing its maximum amount of energy the band will only work as an energy identifier for the user, but it will no longer be able to seal energy.

These techniques include Dark Release Absorption and advanced Fūinjutsu although can include other advanced absorption abilities.
