Orochimaru knew about Indra?

For years Orochimaru was completely obsessed with obtaining Sasuke's body, at first it seems he was after the Sharingan, but it doesn't seem so. He had countless opportunities to obtain Sharingan, even the Mangekyou.

Was his obsession with Sasuke linked to the fact he was Indra's reincarnation? If this is the case then I'm truly amazed at how Orochimaru really knew so much, something Madara doesn't know.
