Okay I can just imagine your faces right now. WTF you're probably saying to yourself right now. Orochimaru is a psychopath who experimented on others, killed people just because he can, invaded his former village, and killed his teacher. Why? Because he is evil, just pure evil but I disagree.
Orochimaru was a prodigy. He was hailed as a genius who's skills and talents would only appear once in a generation so obviously he was in some sort mentally fit.
Now, Orochimaru was a all good ninja on his way to become the next Hokage but at some point he cracked. Most believed that this happened when Hiruzen told him about the symbolism of a white snake when he visited his parents graves but I beg to differ.
During the Second Shinobi World War, Orochimaru fought along side the rest of the Sannin against Hanzo and seemed like a well man. However this is what leads me to believe he was actually a loving man.
The Necklace of Death...!!
Look at the first panel; he looks greatly distraught by the death of Nawaki. Why would he care about Tsunade's brother? He surely wasn't THAT close to the renowned medic so why? Simple, he was the leader of a genin team which Nawaki starred in.
Now this is where I believe the crack happens; look at panel on the bottom right - you can see a facial change and a drastic one; he went from sorrowful to sinister.
I believe that he loved Nawaki (not in the pedophile sort of manner) that he was truly hurt by his death. He then realizes the fragility of the human life and how it affect Tsunade. This led him to want to become immortal (so his death doesn't harm others, and possibly share his technique so others don't become hurt) and learn all techniques, not for some quest for the perfect creature but to protect his loved ones.
Orochimaru is how a normal human being would have reacted to the death of a close one - he mourned (unlike Minato U_U) and changed as a person. He seeked perfection due to his realization of how delicate life is.
What do you think?
