I recently made a post on another thread (Thread was Orochimaru as father figure) where I discussed his role as Sasuke's Sensei compared with the relationship Naruto and Jaraiya had. After the last chapter came out and we saw Oro's current actions and his talk about "winds blowing," I have determined that the reason Orochimaru is following Sasuke's lead is there is something about his ideology that Orochimaru empathizes with. I think that whatever Orochimaru's answer to Sasuke's question about his motives for crushing The Leaf, it was a situation that in some way was similar to Sasuke's situation with his clan and brother. Most likely his parents were killed in their service to the village, and Orochimaru wants to see reform just like Sasuke does. And this mother-effer is just sadistic and curious enough to sit back and watch the whole thing unfold. In addition I do think he cares about Sasuke as his disciple; he is probably proud of him and wants to see his full potential.
