Orochimaru was an Ex-Pupil of the deceased 3rd Hokage "Hiruzen Sarutobi", he Was consisted in a 3 man team along with "Jiraiya" and "Tsunade", these three children were known as the legendary sannin of the leaf village. During his childhood, hiruzen thought orochimaru as a genius a prodigy Due to his Vast knowledge and determination.
During the Time skip the 2nd Shinobi world war had begun, Orochimaru and his former team mates at the time Fought a Very experience ninja called Hanzou, Who thus gave them the title of "Sannin", After the battle with hanzou, they came across 3 Ninjas whom home village had been distraught by war, these 3 children were from a village Called "Amegakure" (Rain Village).
Orochimaru was also an Ex-Member of Anbu and Root Anbu, under the rule of Danzo Shimura at the time, A few months later he encountered a Shinobi known as Kabuto Yakushi, who then became his own latter pupil during the near future.
According to his former team mates Tsuande and Jiraiya, they always thought orochimaru was twisted in some sense, This is where orochimaru decided to Kidnapp exactly 60 Konoha Children Thus making them his Lab rats, once captured he would then perform several Experiments one noting, Transferring the DNA that he stole from the coffin of Senju Hashirama, he tried to implant and combine the childrens DNA with Hashiramas, sadly 59 Children died, making one child left with the DNA This child was known as Yamato. His operation was then beginning to be corrupted, due to the fact Hiruzen fount out what was going on, and confronted orochimaru in the Hokage Faces, which he had used as a labratory, Orochimaru then claimed he was Discovering new and forbidden Jutsu Which we know as today as "Edo Tensei".
Months later Orochimaru joined an organisation known as the Akatsuki, These were a group of immense ninja whom have been reported missing, or are just compete criminals, During his first few months he was paired with "Itachi Uchiha", During a mission Orocohimaru tried to take over itachis body in order to gain the unique kekkei Genkai - The Sharingan, Orochimaru failed in doing this because of how skilled itachi was, he escaped his Technique and slicing orochimaru thus causing orochimaru to flee Akatsuki.

Even at a Young age Orochimaru was thought of as a Genius, Due to his teachings by the third hokage, and the Top level groups he was involved with. During his adulthood, he was known to be a master Manipulator, And a master planner, managing to escape Konoha due to his inforgivable crimes, he was also very smart in jutsu knowledge, thus making him have a huge arsenal of different techniques, and making him Successful in learning forbidden techniques. He was shown to be very intelligent during the time throughout the anime. His knowledge was excellent as he known about hashiramas Cells, and DNA.
