in sasukes fight against itachi when orowas sealed by the sword of Totsuka it was said whoever was being seald will be trapped in a blissful genjutsu for all eternity. Now this theory hinges on whether or not the Orochimaru we have at the moment has all the memories and experiences of his other selves (in the same vein as Kage Bushins)
If we can assume that the current Orochimaru has the memories and experiences of the one trapped by Totsuka, I feel like it would explain his sudden changing of heart and mellowness about everything. It's safe to say a lot of his character came from the trauma of losing his parents and the third not choosing him to become the next Hokage. I think a theoretical eternity of bliss would be enough to mellow just about anyone out.
Of course if Orochimaru has no way to have experienced the part of him sealed in Totsuka...well there goes that idea.
Thoughts anyone?
