He was confident because he saw how messed up Itachi was. Itachi was stabbed with a shuriken, burned, took a direct Kirin, and was barely walking, not to mention he was coughing blood the whole fight.
There was a scene where Orochimaru was saying that even him and Sasuke combined aren't enough to take out Itachi, so I really don't think he was over that weakness he just thought that Itachi was too weakened to put up a fight.
