It has extremely mixed reviews
Several members enjoy it tremendously. Several members utterly despise it. I'm neutral. I really like the animation quality. The story is decent, and it does have some flaws. Doesn't really matter to me. If I can enjoy a good fight scene, then I'm content

It's a average, the problem is the story became harem like and the second half was really another anime entirely. The people that hate it do so because it was disappointing, I expected more from it.

I've heard the anime is just uninteresting.
The video game, with which I have hands-on experience, is complete and total garbage. The characters are boring as hell and the gameplay is drab and repetitive.

I like it overall.
Pro:
- the idea is awesome
- the world is awesome
- the music and openings/endings are wonderful
- the Aincrad-arc was great
- I really enjoyed the sweet story between Kirito and Asuna
- The side-characters were interesting, such as Klein, Agil etc.
- Kayaba Akihiko/Heathcliff was a cool villain and the finale of Aincrad was really thrilling to me.
- Suguha is an awesome character and I can see myself a lot in her and her struggle in the second part of SAO
Contra:
- the harem-stuff was annoying, as it is in every anime
- Kirito didn't have much character development
- the show overall was a bit too fast and skipped too much
- the Alfheim-arc was not really good to me, 'cause I don't like fairy-stuff
- the villain of the Alfheim-arc was horrible and disgusting

Only the first 14 episodes from season 1 was great...after that it just got crap.
The first half of season 1 was awesome. Had its flaws..but it was damn awesome. I dislike romance in anime but I really enjoyed the moments between Kirito and Asuna. But then, they introduced the typical 'love triangle' thing they do In most (if not all) romance genres and that's when the series started going downhill imo. Season 2 started nicely but it was still not as intriguing as the first part of the first season. I finished season 2 out of formality and won't be watching if there's a 3rd season.
It was a decent anime but tbh, it lost its way imo.

I hated how he was a Gary-Stu. Every girl liked him. I like how Suguha liked him because it was a different twist but Kirito was a boring character. The second video game (Alfheim or something)was boring, the second villain was some f*cked up rapist and the manga was gross in this regarding Asuna.
I really loved the premise and the world of SAO was awesome, too bad it was ruined by romance. They could have used the game to its potential while still having romance but no, it's 'let get settled and buy a house and raise a kid'.
The animation and character designs are cool. The few fights were awesome too so this kept me watching. I don't really drop shows I watch unless it's horrendous.

It was awesome at first, but after four or so episodes, it turned into complete garbage. Even the creator of the series said that he didn't plan out most of the story, because originally he wanted it to be a loe story between Kirito and Asuna.
Kirito is basically a mary sue, who is entirely overpowered and unliakable. Between him and Natsu, I think he takes the cake as the worse MC. Basically, all these females fall for him without reason and the game system was entire crap. Plus, the villain of SAO was entirely the WORST villain I have ever seen. He said that he forgot why he created that situation, which is beyond retarded.
This along with Fairy Fail, Asteric War, and other crappy Ecchi, child porn series are the reason why a small part of me hates anime.

I like it overall... Like everyone said, Harem and dropping the original idea ruined it. It could have been a lot better if it had focused more on Aincrad, more level bosses, more and steady development between Kirito and Asuna and finally the 'Finale'. Final battle was good but could have been done at higher levels, maybe a side and detailed investigation of Heathcliff's identity too...
In short, so much wasted potential...

Excalibur/Mother Rosario were like fillers or maybe they're fillers...
I continued to ALO out of curiosity... and ended up watching the whole thing because I had it downloaded and had nothing to do at that time... XD
