Generally I would have to disagree with this statement. If you really think about it, the goal of most ninja's is to kill the other ninja and they tend not to care exactly how they do it. If Oonoki pushed Gai to 8th gate and DID manage to get away, essentially, he won the fight seeing as he forces Gai to make a non-reversible death move. I do agree though that Gai would likely get to Oonoki, regardless of flight abilities.

8th Gates isn't even needed at all honestly. Fact is, he was still pushing JJ Madara back, albeit the latter blocking. Onoki doesn't have flight speed like Juubito or reaction like Ei, let alone Juudara. Not even sure why flight guarantees a win against a non-flying character.
