It's not Kishi, it's the different animation studios, imo. They probably consult Kishi for advice, but they can take liberties with how the "modes" appear.

In general, though, it seems that more "dark" chakra, and more complete patterns, are signs of a stronger Mode.

The form you labeled as BSM is actually RSM. The 2nd and 4th pics you posted simply have the cloak looking longer because Naruto was wearing his hokage cloak. In the 3rd pic , he wasn't wearing that , so the cloak looked shorter. Of course now that I look at the pics again , my explanation only explains differences in cloak length. I honestly can't explain why the swirls and symbols on his cloak seem to differ from appearance to appearance.

I agree with you about the one form of RSM thing. Instead of establishing all of that base RSM , Kurama chakara RSM , etc... crap, Kishi should have just left RSM as just the form we all know and love (the form with truth seeking balls and the magatama and rinnegan symbol on his back). This way , Naruto wouldn't be nerfed and it would be much easier to tell what mode he was in (and we wouldn't have those stupid debates about whether or not Naruto still has RSM).
