[Discussion] One Piece's many episodes and many chapters make the series EPIC

Been having a whole lot of battles with folks on youtube and teamspeak and so on regarding why One piece is better than Fairy tail , bleach and so on. (I was only defending, so no I wasn't acting as the guy was enforcing people to like one piece.)

The common theme shared in everyone who didn't like one piece, and considered it to be "trash" or w.e, was the fact that it was "too long". The same dumb argument was made against one piece, that is normally made against Naruto (how naruto should've ended at pain arc and so on) that one piece should've ended sooner. And what I found the most funny out of these folks is that none of them had actually read or watched one piece completely to even make a judgement on it sucking.


And during those arguments I realized that what makes One Piece so great is the fact that is too long. If One piece was condensed and made small like Fairy tail or HxH or other mangas, it wouldn't be the great series that it is right now. Because what Oda has created is the Odyssey+Illiad +Aeneid of the Anime/Manga kingdom. The content is rich, the journey is epic, the creation of the universe is huge. Its like if you are taking all 3 of those classical epics and combining them together to make a modern piece of storytelling.. you get One Piece.


So One Piece being "Too long" is out of the question, if one piece wasn't as long as its going to be then it wouldn't be anywhere near the masterpiece it is right now. Now only imagine, once its done.. reading from chapter 1 to chapter 1k+ , with the rich story of each arc, and all the interesting characters. I personally can't wait for that, since I'll be taking few days off from my life just to read the entire one piece manga, without missing a single panel to read. If people can't get into it because its "too long", then well don't bother with it , but no reason to say the manga sucks because its just too long.

- Do you feel that One piece is "too long"?

- Does One piece's greatness have something to do with the fact that its a huge manga, and not 500 chapters or 400 chapters?

- Do you feel any other manga compares to it when it comes to be EPIC as far as story goes?

- Your thoughts on reading One piece from chapter 1 to chapter 1k+ when its done?

These are pretty much all the names i can remember from the top of my head, there are also some 20 chapter or so manga that I have read but never bothered paying attention to the name. So just wanted to make sure you guys know that my opinion isn't completely bias XD. And that I actually have some knowledge on different types of manga.

- Nope. But generally as a manga and comparing with other series it is rather long.

-I liked one piece after reading only a few chapters and would be satisfied if it had been a series with a few hundred chapters. But the great thing is it isn't and with more chapters it has one of the most expanded fictional worlds. So, to answer your question, just a little bit.

- Define EPIC.

- Definitely gonna read it again after its finished.

Me personaly think One Piece is the best shonen ever.

I love it.It's epic.The characters are superbly developed and likable.

The story itself is great,I myself didn't think I'd like pirates so much.

No plot holes.Pure EPICNESS.

11/10 in my book

HxH, much shorter and has longer hiatus, yet far more content and better overall manga. If someone hates one piece because it's too long, then that's cool, not everyone has the time nor conviction to read/watch something with more than 500 chaps/episode.


Q1-yes

Q2- No, it's the writing style

Q3-many manags I've read are bette. Hell I even seen a 9 chapters manga that was better and again that's my opinion

Q4-worth it

These reasons are valid to dislike it.

One piece is the No.1 anime I am waching (it's in the 1st place with FMA:brotherhood, I love them both the same) it lacks a bit on Artistic style but still I coudn't find any other mangaka that his fantasy was so full of life and colours with great characters and an epic adventure. DanMachi might do it, but it's too early to say it's only 13 episodes still so who knows...

1.) Yes for both the anime/manga. With the manga, it works well and the anime it doesn't work that well thanks to the garbage pacing.

2.) Yes and no. Like someone mentioned before, HxH is only a mere 349 chapters and it's greatness. If Togashi hired assistants, we could of gotten chapters consistently. HxH has the best and most consistent battle system with some really tactical battles which is a rarity in shonens nowadays. It also captures the more realistic friendship that I've seen (Killua & Gon) and covers some interesting themes. The only factor that puts it back from OP is that the characters aren't as fleshed out as OP, which is to be expected since OP's hiatus chart is no where near as big as HxH. Anyways, my point is, had HxH continued, it could of been the best ongoing shonen. OP is the best shonen for now and always will be since I sadly don't see Togashi getting assistants (I hope he does though, I feel bad for him).

3.) What do you mean as an epic story? We all have our own perception of what makes a story epic. If you're talking about a journey. Nope, I would say there's other series out there that provide a more epic feel journey. Toriko is one of them, thanks to it's enormous world that they're exploring. Not to mention, there's been hints at space exploration so yeah that would just increase the gap even more. Sadly, the series gets pushed aside due to it's premise. At the same time, just because it's seen as epic, doesn't always mean it's the better journey.

Ya know, i can understand why One Piece lengthy chapters scare people away. Some didn't get the chance to spend a month or so to read or watch the whole series to catch up, i mean, we're talking about 700+ episodes and 800+ chapters here. However, i do agree bashing on One Piece yet didn't even read/watch it themselves to understand ain't valid argument to uphold.

I love One Piece, personally my top choice, but i can't say it's the greatest among other series. One Piece is actually a class of its own, you slowly get fond of it as time pass by, just as how you slowly fall in love with your lover. Even if you bi..tch on its weakness,yet you still stuck to it.

Let them haters be. Remember Luffy & Zoro vs Bellamy in Jaya arc? Us and the haters ain't fighting for a same dream, why would we need to stand up to them? It's pointless. Unless they actually read/watch OP, then we talk and debate.

The opinions of people who judge a series which they haven't read, are by default worth nothing. It's irrelevant whether a series is short or long as you can only determine whether a series was good or not by reading it. The 'length' of a series is not determined by the amount of chapters an sich, but by the story. Naruto could indeed be considered too long, not because it had 700 chapters, but because towards the end Kishi was dragging the story out so much you lost all touch with it. This is not the case with OP.

- So yeah OP is not too long, on the contrary.

- No, the amount of chapters has nothing to do with this. This is the same principle of cause and effect. OP is not great because it has so many chapters, but because is such a good mangaka that he can create so many chapters without quality loss. That's also the reason as why they let him continue. As long as there isn't any loss of quality and the story isn't being mangled, why stop? Even after 800 chapters Oda manages to surprise me and make me crave for more.

- OP is my #1 manga and in my personal opinion it's this generation's Dragonball.

- Same concept as holding a Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy or Star Wars marathon: paradise with lots of junkfood~

not really... it's the style of story telling mostly.

Definition of epic may differ for people.

Some chapters and arc from here and there maybe but the whole series? Nope.

For me it's the writing style. It far surpasses the styles of other mangas I've read.

Also, the characters are a bit more...realistic in One Piece. the fights are powered by "nakama power", sure, but not nearly as much as Fairy Tail or Naruto.

And I love that all the SH members have unique abilities and dreams of their own. These separate dreams are what gives One Piece a good base to stand on.

I think the OP used the word epic in the literal sense, not meaning "fantastic" or whatnot but as he said, comparable in style of storytelling and events to the epics.
Well then from the manga that we have so far some pure fighting manga and other long ones are definitely not worth being in this category so maybe yes, you can consider One Piece epic in that sense.

I haven't read Fairy Tail past the 5th chapter as far as I remember so I won't judge it. Maybe it became better later on (doubt it).

Comparing it to Bleach though is unfair. The world of Bleach is much smaller, the characters more one dimensional or even swallow at most and the villains likewise. But hey, some characters are cool and the fights are usually nice and the drawing style is appealing so it's not trash either.

Personally I started One Piece quite late so I did read many chapters to catch up. Some arcs were not as interesting as others but it is inevitable. I did read it all though and when I finished it the only thing that I had to complain about is that now I would have to wait a whole week to get a new one!
