Hey guys
I originally made a theory where i speculated Oda's inspiration for the Yonko Kaidou.
After much deliberation over the manga, and references I felt were obvious.
I decided that this feared Yonko was based after the Infamous 'Napoleon Bonaparte' of France.
Before you do go on to read this continuation I really do recommend you read my initial theory, linked as follows: :
If you dont want to ,(that makes me a saaaaaad Panda btw south park reference lol), I have briefly touched on it below (sexual harassment Panda lol)
To begin, I will briefly touch on the gist of my initial thread, why I hypothesised that Kaidou is based on the former EMPEROR of France, Napoleon:
1. Trafalgar D Water-Law :
Law's name carries TWO references to Naval battles. The first is the Battle of Trafalgar, (which pit the British against Spanish and French fleets), and the second being the Battle of Waterloo, (Water-Law), against the French army directly lead by Napoleon.
Both wars being part of the Napoleonic wars
2. Dressrosa = Spain:
As mentioned, the Battle of Trafalgar, pitted the British against the combined fleets of the French and Spanish.
Dressrosa itself is modelled on the Spanish city 'Barcelona'
Doflamingo is based on the famous novel 'The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha'
So we can claim as part of the Battle of Trafalgar, Doflamingo represents the Spanish side of the combined French and Spanish fleets.
3. Kaidou's Agreement with Doflamingo
Since the first Battle of Trafalgar represented the British against both the French and Spanish, it is more than reasonable to reject this theory because Kaidou nor his army have appeared int his arc.
True, however what we can also reasonably claim is that, Spain (Doflamingo), and France (Kaidou), are working together or rather have an agreement (that is Oda's twist on it)
Also since the most famous war regarding Napoleon, and what really set the motions in his fall as Emperor was the Battle of Waterloo was a war that he directly participated in. I feel that this Dressrosa arc is part of TWO set up arcs that will lead us to Oda's version of the Battle of Waterloo
Now that you get the basic idea, let me continue this theory:
Kaidou - Edo Period - Peaches :
Now I have consistently stressed that Oda's inspiration for Kaidou is Napoleon Bonaparte.
Meaning i expect Kaidou to be a Fairly Small Man of stature with a BIG INTIMIDATING personality, and an Extremely Powerful Zoan Fruit
That being said, what is definetely not a homage to Napoleon is Kaidou's name itself.
Kaidou - 街道 , were roads in Japan in the EDO PERIOD:
his is very interesting because it is a very old fashioned Japanese name
Now let me move on to another Edo period related name, Momonosuke:
'Momo' - 桃 , means Peach.
There is a famous Japanese folktale called ''Peach Boy'' or ''Momotaro''
Here is a brief summary of the story:
==============================================================================
An elderly couple with no children discover a huge peach floating down the river . When they try to eat it, a little boy comes out. The boy's declares that he is from Heaven , so the couple takes him and names him Momotaro (Peach Boy).
When Momotarou grows up he leaves his parents to fight some demons and using some millet dumplings his parents gave him, befriends a Dog, Monkey and Pheasant .
They go off and kill Demons and the story ends in peace.
==============================================================================
Here is a picture of Momtaro:
Here is a picture of Momonosuke:
As you can see not only the name but the appearance also takes inspiration from the famous tale, down to the peaches on Momonosuke's clothes and the peach on the flag of Momotaro
Another interesting fact is that story is based on the EDO PERIOD
(are you noticing where I am going with this?)
Now, im sure you picked up on the three animals in the folktale that Momotaro befriends:
1. The Dog
2. The Monkey
3. The Pheasant
Most of us are aware of the other famous folktale regarding these animals and their links to the pre-time skip Admirals.
However in this story i believe they represent the following Characters:
1. Kinemon (The Dog)
2. Unnamed Samurai (The Monkey)
3. Kanjuro (The Pheasant)
(PLEASE DO NOT CONFUSE THIS STORY REGARDING THE ANIMALS TO THE OTHER FOLKTALE WHICH REPRESENTS THE PRE-TIMESKIP ADMIRALS)
In order for me to explain
Please remember the following fact:
Momonosuke was being accompanied by 3 Samurai: Kinemon, Kanjuro a third unnamed Samurai related to this tale who is either in Zo or Wano-Kuni.:
To begin let me address Kine'Mon:
Kinemon's name can be split into two:
1. 'Kin' can loosely be translated to Gold
2. 'Emon' can loosely be translated as Guard.
A rough paraphrase is the 'Guard of Gold' or 'Guard of Treasure'
(hmm what could Kinemon be guarding?)
Now, Kinemon as we know has a Samurai fighting style, and specifically a unique fighting style called:
狐火流Kitsunebi-ryū or Fox-fire style
This I believe is Oda's nod to the Dog which accompanied Momotaro on his journey.
Another link to the ongoing EDO PERIOD theme, is Kinemon's nature itself.
He carries a seemingly strict life style which follows the way of the Bushido of the Edo Period, from his style of clothing, his shock at Nami's personality and clothing which indicates wherever he is from is a very conservative and strict place
Just look at his response to Sanji/Nami saving him:
Kanjuro and the Unnamed third Samurai do not have enough information to go on, however, I believe Oda after revealing Kanjuro gave two Immediate hints
Kanjuro:
Kanjuro adds to the ongoing EDO PERIOD theme, his name itself is an old fashioned name stemming back to the Edo era, and his character design is that of a traditional Nabuki poser:
However, what really stood out for me was what Kanjuro drew on the wall showcasing his ability for the first time:
A sparrow, another nod from Oda to the Momotaro story, this time to the Pheasant.
As I mentioned the third Samurai/Animal, the Monkey, will be revealed in either Zo or Wano-Kuni itself.
Now moving back to the story of Momotaro (Peach Boy), these animals were of no relation to Peach Boy but rather protectors.
I believe this is the same with Momonosuke, Kinemon, Kanjuro and the third samurai.
As i mentioned earlier:
Kinemon's name can be split into two:
1. 'Kin' can loosely be translated to Gold
2. 'Emon' can loosely be translated as Guard.
A rough paraphrase is the 'Guard of Gold' or 'Guard of Treasure'
Since the characters in the story the three Samurai are based on revolved around protect Momotaro,
THE 'GOLD' KINEMON IS GUARDING IS MOMONOSUKE HIMSELF
Things brings me to the next section
Momonosuke the Key?:
Momonosuke for some reason carries a major question around him, why does Doflamingo want him:
Many believe that it is because he had eaten the Artificial Zoan Fruit created by VEGAPUNK, (That's right not Cesar as many believe for some reason):
However I believe Doflamingo wants him for the following reason:
MOMONOSUKE IS THE RIGHTFUL SHOGUN OR HEIR TO THE RIGHTFUL SHOGUN OF WANO-KUNI
Before you scoff at the possibility of such a thing I propose the following hypothesis:
Kaidou at one point set his sights on Wano-Kuni, a private conservative Kingdom that outsiders, EVEN MARINES, did not go to:
This Kingdom seems to have been so cut off from the outside world, Samurai such as Kinemon did not know what Devil Fruit was and even referrred to his abilities as 'Sorcery':
(Considering Wano-Kuni is located in the new world, I cannot state how unbelievable that is, is Wano-Kuni that cut off from the world?)
Now continuing my hypothesis;
Kaidou and his Zoan army invade Wano-Kuni, and with their 'Magic Powers', state that they have come to rule over the Kingdom as sent from Heaven, and force the nation to instill Kaidou as the new Shogun.
Momonosuke's father, the rightful Shogun a strong and noble warrior is Killed or Imprisoned, and Kaidou then decides to eliminate the Shoguns lineage, which the people of Wano-Kuni consider holy which of course includes Momonosuke.
Kinemon, Kanjuro and the third Samurai, are loyal Samurai serving the Shogun and discover Kaidou is nothing but a pirate save Momonosuke and flee the Kingdom making a oath to come back and restore Momonosuke as the rightful Shogun and eliminate the Dictator who has taken their country.
What do you guys think?
Is it far fetched?
We do know Kinemon and Momonosuke both acted extremely weird at the mere mention of Kaidou's name:
Before you set your opinion in stone, take a look at the following;
Momonosuke's very demeanour screams arrogance in the Royal sense of 'Im of a better lineage than you'.
His refusal of food as a stowaway on the ship heading to Punk Hazard was linked to Kinemon who was also avoiding food, (possible oath between the two until they could find help to tackle the problem back home)
However I also believe it was related to his status as nobility in which were he would be wary of what he consumed incase of assassination:
Momonosuke is also quite articulate for a child his age, especially in comparison to the children he was surrounded by, hinting at a high level of education, one of which is expected of royal blood:
Last but not least was the MASSIVE hint to Momonosuke's true heritage:
And of course when he made some of the crew 'Play Shogun':
I believe Doflamingo wants Momonosuke for TWO reasons:
1. A means to bargain with Kaidou, as Doflamingo would hold the rightful heir to the Shogun empire
2. Momonosuke has eaten a very SPECIAL Zoan fruit
Alongside being able to 'Bargain' with Kaidou if something went wrong with Smile
I believe Doflamingo had Ceasar try to imitate a specific fruit
The 'Dragon-Dragon Fruit', (Dragon-Dragon fruit is my own literal interpretation of the name of the fruit, however in the next part of the theory I will explain why) and the owner of that fruit is none other than Kaidou himself
