Can someone explain to me the function and difference in power of each of luffy's gears?

Like 2nd gear, what does it do to him? why does his skin turn pink and why does his body have steam coming off of it? How much stronger does that make him?

I've been trying to get more into OP but I'm having trouble grasping their power levels. It isn't like a DBZ, or Naruto where a person can sense someones power so I'm looking to have it explained a bit more.

Gears 2 and 3 aren't inherently stronger than each other. They serve a different purpose. Gear Third is pretty straightforward. He inflates his bones to increase the heaviness and destructive capacity of his blows. It's basically the "power" Gear.

Gear Second is more combat friendly, but serves a different purpose. He doesn't actually turn pink, that's something that was added to the anime only. What he does is, he pumps his blood through his body faster, causing his body to use up more nutrients and creating a higher output of energy. It basically lets him move much faster than he could without it.

it's like one guy already explained with g2 he uses his legs to pump blood through his body at a much higher rate and since his organs are rubber he can handle it, but it pumps nutrients through his body faster g3 he blows air into his bones with g4 I'm not sure because I haven't gotten to it yet but I assume its sort of a mix of the 3 with haki added in

In Gear 4, he inflates his muscles. He then uses Haki to forcefully manipulate his body's structure. Like, when he pulls his arm back into his arm like a piston, he's pulling it backwards with Haki.

2nd is more like the speed and 3rd is more of the heavy hitter. It's pretty simply, I think. How the gears work have been explained by previous posts.

G2: For speed
G3: For power
