One Piece Manga Sets Guinness World Record

The official website for Eiichiro Oda's One Piece manga announced on Monday in Japan that the manga has set a Guinness World Record for "The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author." As of the end of December 2014, the manga has 320,866,000 copies printed worldwide.

Oda commented on the award through a written statement: "Thank you for this certification for the Guinness World Record. Manga is an amusing way to pass time, but when I receive reports that say 'through One Piece I made friends,' or 'through One Piece I found my sweetheart,' I am really happy." He continued by saying, "I feel like this record number has the possibility to bring the same number of people together. I will not forget my predecessors in the manga world, the colleagues whom I work with, and my readers, and from now on I want to continue to draw a work that will not shame this record."

A ceremony was held in Tokyo on Monday to present the award. Oda was not in attendance, but Weekly Shonen Jump editor Yoshihisa Heishi attended on his behalf.

Oda launched One Piece in 1997, and the manga has been published in more than 30 countries. Shueisha released the manga's 77th volume with an initial print run of 3.8 million copies on April 3.

Weekly Shonen Jump revealed on Monday in Japan that One Piece will have big news in the 29th issue of the magazine, which ships on June 22.

I agree though. One Piece is truly a masterpiece. I'm glad I gave it another chance.

Forums, manga cafe, or it could have just been at a book store and the love of OP was something both had in common.

OT: One Piece is a masterpiece and truly the best manga out there (my opinio n) Oda happily pours his blood sweat and tears into this manga and we all love him for his hard work.

You make it seem like One Piece plays an influential role in their marriage, when it could just merely be the gateway to how these couples had met. One moment is all it takes to ignite a relationship (I know some people who met their wife/GFs under unusual circumstances and I'm sure you heard some of these stories before). From there, the relationship itself doesn’t have to be dependent on this common interest. In fact, it almost-certainly won't. You can’t expect a manga to maintain and develop a relationship. Though, what you can expect from it is that it can trigger the creation of one.

I think this is a better place to put this thread in. Sure, it's related to One Piece, but this achievement is recognised on a global scale (the very fact that OP is the best selling comic series), so it makes more sense to put it here than in the OP section.

That's a hell of an achievement. The man deserves it though, One Piece is a work of art like no other. Would have been nice if he got to accept his award himself up in person, I hope he didn't miss out on that due to his health.

Congrats to Oda! I have a feeling this won't be the only comic book/manga record he holds by the end of One Piece
