its true not much has be shown regarding the character i can fully agree with people that say that
however what has been shown in both manga and in anime
here is a few of his feats and skills.
1. highly capable tracker and has extensive knowledge of the human body.
we see this when he goes to chase down danzou and his personal sidemen.
2.He was also clearly a very skilled combatant, as he was capable of defeating a member of the Hyuga clan.
plus he has one byakugan eye that he keeps coverd. (he's like a bloddymist kakashi with byakugan)
3. he is a missing nin hunter. you have to be above average shinobi to do this.
4.survived a fight with Shisui Uchiha, a feared shinobi who was regarded as a genius even amongst the Uchiha.
5. the Captain of the Sensor Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces
6. the ability to sense natural energy. picking out edo shinobi from zetsu soldiors
7. he said that his eye saw through the illusion placed on mifune by danzou
8. he was able to detect that the eye in Danzō's right eye socket as well as his right arm had the colour of Shisui Uchiha's chakra. thats F'IN crazy
and thats just scimming through his achievments in naruto.
he's not one of my fav's but he deffinetly gets some +rep from me lol
