They can go three routes:

1. Strictly follow the manga, no filler, no dragged out scenes. Then add filler in every so often.

2. Loosely follow the manga, same core events but they're dragged out longer (Ex: Jiraiya vs all 6 paths). Almost like canon filler.

3. Hiatus.

They're probably going with #2, and in the new episode that's what they did. The only thing that happened in the entire episode was FTG'ing out of the barrier.
