Has anyone ever notice that in One Piece Okamas are portrayed as really different? Not even transvestites are that weird? Okamas are in a league of their own like a third gender in One Piece. Its really hard to tell what and where this inspiration source could have been for Oda. I mean no other manga go into to the type of depth that One piece does about the "Okamas" or could we even really call them that or should we use more proper words like "Hijras"

Hijras are transvestites in India that are considered to be a "Third-Gender." Could this be Oda source of inspiration for his fabulous Okamas. I'll start off by making some comparisons to Okama home land and how Hijras have there family setting and support network. In Villupuram a village in India were leading up to the first full moon of the Tamil New Year Hijras gather is the closest thing I have found to a Okama homeland. Koovagam is also a village that can be call a Hijra homeland because of Aravan a deity warrior,

Aravan legen goes back to a long war between good and evil called The Kurukshetra war. Aravan agrees to do self sacrifice before Goddess Kali for the victory of the Pandavas. His only wish was to get married before the sacrifice. But no woman was ready to get married for a day.

Sri Krishna then takes the form of Mohini and marries Aravan. This single day marriage is celebrated during the Koovagam Transgender Festival at Koovagam village in Tamil Nadu. Aravan is here known as Koothandavara. So the village is kind of named after him.

Now to the special powers of the Hijras. Hijras have the mythicalical power of making a barren woman fertile, scaring off malevolent djinns(demons), nullify the evil eye. and even putting curses on people. Now where have I seen this special fertility power before?.....What? Ivankov when he turned that big guy into that big booty hoe. Ivankov's power can be considered a blessing or a curse depending on who you talk to like Mr. 2 good idea.

BTW Fact: Hijras refer to themselves women just like Okamas. Hijras live in mostly ghetto type areas and the new Okama homeland was in a prison. Oda loves using references so this is very possible.

It's an interesting view on transvestites and gay for sure.

How-ever... if you think about, it also just plays very much into the regular nature of One Piece.

It's a world that is filled with maniacs and monsters, the entire straw hat crew is a crew made up from freaks and outsiders, all with very big personalities and very odd weird personalities even looks.

How-ever, their big message about being pirates is that as a pirate you are allowed to be free, you are free to be yourself and, as mad and crazy as you are.

All the Okamas we have met thus far, have not just been Okamas, they have been pirates, living under the same pirate codex of being free and being yourself as pirates do have in this world, pirates in this world is the anarchists messing up the system of the world goverment, and are just being themselves while having fun.
The Okama pirates are just, no different from that.

One Piece is indeed just an insane manga, whom promotes the ideal that if you are weird, or is called a monster, or looked upon as being different.. You should relish that and be free! It's a good thing in this world, and the insanity just feeds upon more insanity!

So really, I think the Okama of One piece very simply just play into the average pirate culture of one Piece, they don't follow rules and are basically just a bunch of anarchists doing what ever the hell they want, not caring what othe people think of it, because they are just free like that.

... Tell that to the swords man whom is to cool for two swords, no no! He needs a third one in his mouth, gets horrible lost when he tries to walk two steps, either trains with weight that is the seize of a smaller mountain or sits around sleeping... or drinking barrels of sake.

And the cook whom goes litterately bananas when a woman is involved, changing from dead cool to idiot in a split second, always have that smoke in his mouth, and always take the time to light it before battle coming with some kind of cool comment, have flaming kicks and is now able to walk on air...

The insanly creative liar whom can make up inventions and use them in a matter of seconds, tells lies from the hip instantly, can shoot a person whom are ten miles away and still hit the spot... take a ten ton bat to the head and be just fine..

Woman whom can read the weather by, feeling it on her skin, gets crazy when money is involved.

Woman with Hanah Nomi fruit whom just LOVES her morbid humour. "Maybe a zombie tore his head off..." *Complete straight face.*

The straw hat crew is a collection of very very strange people, but that's exactly why we love them so!
Just look at Usopp back at his introduction, among the villagers from Syrup HE is the strange one, how-ever, with the strawhats he is compleately at home!

The thing just is that Luffy, Franky, Chopper and Brook are even stranger than the rest -_-;

It's a good thought, and it's safe to say that Oda have had at least heard of Hijras, hence the power to change gender etc.

But i strongly believe Oda in major refers to Japanese society whom are transvestites; "Okama". Youtube or google it up for confirmation, since most of their appearances are as have been portrayed in the OP series. The feminine clothes, 'Okama Way' style and masculine-looks... They're much closer to Japanese okama traits rather than Hijras. Unless, Oda meshes both concepts altogether :D

Zoro lacks social skills and others find it very strange the kind of situations he sleeps in. His lack of direction also makes him a freak.

Sanji is extremely perverse. Violet said she's never seen a mind as dirty as his, and the way he acts around women support this.

Usopp's lying is freak of nature level.

Robin says extremely creepy things casually that would make people around her uncomfortable.

Nami is money-obsessed. Her shopping is enough to be seen as a weirdo.

Every Strawhat is a freak/weirdo in some way.
