Has anyone ever notice that in One Piece Okamas are portrayed as really different? Not even transvestites are that weird? Okamas are in a league of their own like a third gender in One Piece. Its really hard to tell what and where this inspiration source could have been for Oda. I mean no other manga go into to the type of depth that One piece does about the "Okamas" or could we even really call them that or should we use more proper words like "Hijras"
Hijras are transvestites in India that are considered to be a "Third-Gender." Could this be Oda source of inspiration for his fabulous Okamas. I'll start off by making some comparisons to Okama home land and how Hijras have there family setting and support network. In Villupuram a village in India were leading up to the first full moon of the Tamil New Year Hijras gather is the closest thing I have found to a Okama homeland. Koovagam is also a village that can be call a Hijra homeland because of Aravan a deity warrior,
Aravan legen goes back to a long war between good and evil called The Kurukshetra war. Aravan agrees to do self sacrifice before Goddess Kali for the victory of the Pandavas. His only wish was to get married before the sacrifice. But no woman was ready to get married for a day.
Sri Krishna then takes the form of Mohini and marries Aravan. This single day marriage is celebrated during the Koovagam Transgender Festival at Koovagam village in Tamil Nadu. Aravan is here known as Koothandavara. So the village is kind of named after him.
Now to the special powers of the Hijras. Hijras have the mythicalical power of making a barren woman fertile, scaring off malevolent djinns(demons), nullify the evil eye. and even putting curses on people. Now where have I seen this special fertility power before?.....What? Ivankov when he turned that big guy into that big booty hoe. Ivankov's power can be considered a blessing or a curse depending on who you talk to like Mr. 2 good idea.
BTW Fact: Hijras refer to themselves women just like Okamas. Hijras live in mostly ghetto type areas and the new Okama homeland was in a prison. Oda loves using references so this is very possible.
