OK so I was rereading the Land of Waves arc and I cam across this.

An exhausted and hurt Kakashi created at least 2 dozen Kage Bushins. Not the normal bushin jutsu, but kage bushin.

You do realize that Kagebushin doesn't necessarily cost chakra but divides it up evenly.
2 dozen Kakashi clones = 2 dozen fodder.

Hiruzen was over 70, too old to use the jutsu

Tobirama invented the jutsu but wasn't in a position to master it and I'll bet one if his clones is worth 20 of Kakashi's.

Hashirama could use +20 wood clones if he wanted, and each of them was strong enough to use Susanoo as proven by Madara.

Kakashi has poor reserves. After battle Zabuza once, he collapsed from exhaustion. In the rematch, one week later, the fight lasts just as long and he is able to perform Taiyu Kage Bushin. How does he have the chakra to perform that many? And he never uses kage bushin like that again.

I always thought he just did the normal bushin, which are images and not solid. But for him to be able to create that many solid clones... how?

Yeah, but why not use the Rank E "Bushin" jutsu, instead of the Rank B "Kage Bushin"? Both would've accomplished what Kakashi was going for. Recall the Kage Bushin is a forbidden jutsu because of what it does to shinobi who divide their chakra too much.

I thought so too, but no. Anime has Kage Bushin also.

There's something of note in the manga. Naruto constantly calls Tajū Kage Bunshin as Kage Bunshin. So from my point of view Kakashi may HAVE done a normal Bunshin but called it out as a Kage Bunshin. Kakashi isn't the type to waste chakra so stupidly even if the event he was in was near its end. After all he did say, "...it might fool them..." He isn't a master of deception for nothing.

Their isn't a minimum threshold for jutsu, If one uses a jutsu and the jutsu leaves you with 0 chakra then the person will die

I meant in the sense that, you require a certain amount of chakra that has to be molded to perform a jutsu. As Ebisu and Kakashi explain in Part 1.
