Pretty good feat for a 69 year old way past his prime. Hiruzen knew Hashirama and Tobirama personally. He has seen their techniques because they have both taught him. I'm pretty sure Hiruzen would know how to counter his own teachers. Moreover Hiruzen already admitted that he was once at some point the strongest Hokage. Iruka said he is the strongest Hokage to the Academy students. Hiruzen replied with "Hey, Iruka!! Don't use past tense!!" Hiruzen IMPLIED he that he was the strongest in his prime. Iruka is a teacher in the academy, he should be able to know the History well. Heres when Sarutobi implied that before he was the strongest.
