what is wrong with liking a CHARACTER'S POWER? I see this as perfectly normal, why would I like the Konoha elders?

Because those two have lots of fans right? :| They don't even count as secondary characters... Its not just about power, far from it. For me personality, design, portrayal, concept and background matter 100x more :>
Its not wrong to like a characters abilities but bandwagoning is annoying as hell. Its like those couples who say they're in love when its all superficial, all fake o>o

OT: I feel the same, but at the same time we cannot change other people's tastes. If others are easily captivated only those characteristics and look like kids we just have to respect that (as long as they respect others as well ofc).
