* * Cyrus’s POV * *

Grasping the pebbling he had, he tossed it lightly into the air. “When this rock falls into the river, we begin!”

And so, time seemed to slow as the pebble fell from its suspended position in the sky. Everything seemed to have an extra detail to it as the events began to unfold. The trees seemed to rustle louder, the river seemed to sparkle more and more, and both our heartbeats seemed to be amplified in the air.

And as soon as the pebble touched the water, myself and Gai kicked off the ground, clashing fists only inches above the river.

I could feel the emotion swelling between the both of us. It may not be said every time we meet, but we both have a very strong bond as a master and student. He was happy to teach me, and proud to see how I had progressed, while I was happy to be his student, and grateful for everything he has done for me. I noticed it once we were above the river, too. The smile on his face that reflected my own. This was a serious match, but neither of us could help but feel all happy inside. This was my first battle as a ninja, or at least my first spar as one. I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next.

The water exploded from the force of our contact. As the water seemed to part from where we were standing, we both brought our knees up, attempting to attack each other’s solar plexus while deflecting the oncoming attack at the same time. Using the center of our lower legs as an axis, we pulled our feet up to one another and kicked off the soles, both of us landing an equal distance from the lake, staring at one another fiercely.

Gai looked as hyped as I did, and wasted no time to prove the severity of his determination. He kicked off the ground, soaring across the lake at a speed that matched my own. As he flashed across the river, he came face to face with me, his body only inches above my head. His wrist curving a bit as he attempted to punch me in the chest, but my reaction time on par with his decreased speed. I grabbed onto his wrist as his attack went through, not exactly damaging me, but pushing me back none-the-less. I pulled up on his hand as his body spun around, following through with the attack as his body rotated mid-air.

“Konoha Senpū!”

Once I was above him, I did a small flip in the air, allowing my leg to stretch out completely as I aimed a lateral Konoha Senpū at his arm. Pulling his left leg over to where mine was, he kicked my outstretched leg out of the way, causing me to miss my attack as he moved towards the ground.
The youthful ninja wasted no time with his recoil. Once he fell to the ground, he got into a push-up position and threw himself back into a standing form. I myself fell to the ground a bit less gracefully, but rolled over into a crouching position.

“Dainamikku Entorī!”

As Gai ran at me, he jumped into the air, his foot extended out in a straight line. I knew his signature attack by heart, the Dainamikku Entorī, a flying kick moving at incredible speed. He was moving very fast, as expected, but his aim was weird. In a crouched position, my face and knees were exposed, but Gai was aiming above my head. What the hell was he doing?

I did what was in my best interest, and stood up, ready to kick off the ground to my side in an attempt to avoid the attack. Before I could, however, Gai suddenly flashed under me at a speed I did not know he was capable of achieving in his handicapped state.

“Konoha Reppū!”

Gai got down completely and pulled out his left leg, swinging it at my own with caused me to trip over to my side. In the fashion that I was falling, I was able to go into a full handstand, pushing myself forward once I was stabilized in order to land a drop kick on Gai. He moved himself out of the way just in time, kicking off the ground from the foot that was supporting him while he did his Konoha Reppū, and spun in the air using his outstretched foot as an axis.. It was almost as if he-

“Dainamikku Entorī!”

Gai attempted the attack a second time, and actually managed to land the hit. Somehow, he was able to push off of the foot that was keeping him upright when he used his Konoha Reppū, spinning as he did such a feat in order to generate more power. Along with that, he was able to push off the air itself, which is supposed to be impossible, even for Naruto standards, and especially without chakra.

I found myself skidding across the surface of the lake before being flung over the rocky edge, smashing into a nearby tree. Thank god I have more endurance, or that would have been a life-changing injury.

I stood up from the attack, but my leg took most of the damage from the attack. It seems that I won’t be able to perform anymore lower body taijutsu for the time being. I was probably going to be pummeled since legs are life, but hey, work with what you got.

Gai channeled some chakra into his feet to run across the river. I stood there, motionless, and breathed out a sigh. Pulling myself together, I put my injured leg behind me, resting my foot on the front of my sandal while I folded a hand behind my back, the opposing limp stretching in front of me with my palm up and fingers together. Gai ran faster and faster, coming at me full speed with another attack planned. I breathed in a very calm fashion, the pain in my leg caused my face to scrunch into a grimace, but I stayed still none the less.

Just as the youthful ninja jumped into the air for another Dainamikku Entorī, I pulled my arms together in an X-shape, holding off most of the attack once it landed right at the center of my defense. In one swift motion, I pivoted off of my uninjured foot, spinning into a jump as I aimed a fist for Gai’s cheek. He looked surprised, probably expecting me to be able to pull off such a feat with my injury, but it didn’t seem like he actually knew where it was. In the small moments before my attack followed through, I noticed the smallest smirk on his face, and I couldn’t help but smirk back. My body was rotating, he was recoiling from his attack, and in that perfect moment…
I landed a punch of Gai sensei’s face.

* * *

“Very good, my youthful student.” Gai said. I landed a hit, but it wasn’t a hard one. That’s unfortunate. Now, we were back to where we started. I was sitting on my rock and he was standing over me.

“Thanks, sensei.” I said, a bit tired from the spar we just had. I guess the adrenaline rush I was feeling before pulled back.

“Your footwork is getting ever better, but you still lack upper body strength.” Gai said, looking at me sternly. “Hopefully your Ninjutsu and Genjutsu training will make up for it.”

“I do to…” I said, trailing off a bit. “Gai-sensei, can I ask something of you?”

“Of course!” He said, flashing a smile at me.

“I have an idea I want to work on, and I think we both can learn from it sometime in the future.” I began. “Can I come back and train with you once I get settled into the academy, and possibly genin life?”

“Cyrus, you can come train with me any time you like.” He said. “Just remember, a ninja must never give into doubt. You’ll overcome your weaknesses no matter who you come across.”

“Hm.” I said, flashing a similar smile to Gai. “Thank you, sensei.”

“No problem.” He walked over to me, bending down to where I was sitting and put a hand on my shoulder. “You managed to learn two D-rank Taijutsu techniques. That’s very good, and I’m proud of you for that. You also added your own spin on them, and managed to cover both defensive and offensive movement in your fight quite well. You’ll get better these next few years, believe it!”

“Thank you, Naruto.” I said.

Gai couldn’t help but laugh at the comment. I can’t say that I didn’t laugh back, either.
The next day came, and after my wounds were healed at the hospital and my leg was restored to its previous state, I was able to go back to doing what I had planned. Kurenai, however, had something else in mind.

“Wait, what?” I said in response to her comment. Once again, I was out in the training fields, on my rock.

“I said that you were going to do Ninjutsu before you did Genjutsu.” She restated. “It’s extremely stupid to put you in such a situation where Chakra control is vital if you have no control over your chakra.”

“This is true.” I said, looking her in the eye. “But couldn’t you just teach it to me?”

“No.” She said.

“Why?” I asked.

“Not my job.” She replied.

“That’s a shame.” I confirmed.

“It is, isn’t it?” She replied once more, looking out into the forest. “Someone else is going to do it, and it won’t be one of us jounin.”

“Then who?”

“I am.” A man said, walking out of the forest and into the light. He was rather tall with a darker skin tone than most people in the village. He was wearing a standard ninja outfit, consisting of a blue long-sleeve and a green flak jacket, with a weapon holster strapped to his leg. His blue Konoha headband was strapped to his forehead, and a long scar was present across the bridge of his nose.

“Cyrus, meet…” Kurenai began.

“Iruka-sensei.” I finished, looking at one of my favorite people in the entire manga.
