* * Cyrus’s POV * *

I realized that a lack of chakra wasn’t the only issue I was having in the Ninja World. Although having a nice batch of blue energy in your belly was useful, you can’t really do much if you’re not physically fit. I was a fully-fledged Otaku when I came here, and let me tell you, the best workout I get is 30 minutes in Gym playing soccer or something, but now my entire drive for doing anything is solely based on staying alive.

Back to the matter at hand, though. These little inputs on my life are the least of my problems. Asuma’s Fuuton: Fuujin no Jutsu was gaining ground on me, and although it was clearly being suppressed, my top speed of about 8 miles per hour was not going to save me. I turned my head to see a thick cloud of black dust only inches from my heels, causing my eyes to shrink in a comical fashion.

Dear god, this man is trying to kill me.

I kept looking for a low branch I could jump on, but all of them seemed to be a good feet or two above my maximum stretching range. My only options were to be engulfed by the attack or to try to leap for a branch. Asuma, clearly insane, was probably expecting me to use chakra to jump ever so higher, but last time I checked, my chakra was barely flowing and most of it was still stick where it was injected. This whole “jump start your chakra” thing is complete bullshit, you know.

After another 15 seconds of running, I finally came across a branch low enough for me to grab onto. It was about 6 feet off the ground, just barely over my head, and it was long enough for me to grab onto and stand on. Jumping forward, I loosely grabbed onto the branch with both of my hands and used the momentum to flip over onto my feet. I sighed, a white puff of air leaving my mouth as the thick cloud of ash and dust pushed its way passed the tree. The cloud was only 3 feet tall, but was travelling faster than me, and was pretty thick. The tree shook as it was bombarded with dust, causing me to grip to the base like a madman.

2 minutes passed and the struggle was over. The dust cleared from the ground, revealing bleached grass and grey dirt, a fitting example of what happens when nature is eroded by ash and dust. Asuma, smiling at me, gave me a thumbs up from where Gai and Kurenai were standing. I didn’t even notice how raggedy I looked. The bottom of my scarf was torn a little, my hair was a mess, and the stress on my face was only accompanied by my now gigantic white eyes. I was so stressed the damn things were popping out of my head.

“Still not flowing.” Gai and Kurenai said at the same time.

“Really?” Asuma asked in confusion, turning to the duo in question. “I could have sworn that would have scared the hell out of him.”

“Nope. It’s going from his abdomen to his heart. That’s it.” Kurenai confirmed.

“Oh, that’s a shame.” Asuma said, weaving more hand signs as he turned back to me.

"Katon: Haisekishō!" The smoking Jounin yelled, spewing a large amount of chakra-infused gunpowder into the forest and air.

I looked at him with the blankest face I could muster, sliding off the branch and onto the forest floor. My heart rate had slowed down a bit, so I could once again pick up the pace. Leaning in on my right foot, I began to make a mad dash into the forest, Asuma surprisingly trailing close behind.

And then he set the forest on fire.

Wait, WHAT?!

Clicking his teeth together with a flint in his mouth, Asuma emerged from the gunpowder field with a large explosion initiating behind him. He was running fast, very fast, and coming right at me. I wouldn’t be able to dodge any of his attacks professionally, but I doubt he would be attacking in such a way either. Along with that, the chakra-enhanced fire was spreading faster than it normally should, and would engulf the entire forest in seconds. This was going to be beyond tough.

I stopped running just as Asuma began to pursue me, stamping my foot on the ground to stop myself. Chakra in his blades, he charged right into me, kneeing me in the stomach as I was sent flying into a tree. My back smashed into it, and I could hear my spine crack as it did. Well, there goes standing.

The fire spread around the forest in mere moments, and I was now faced with a wall of roaring flames that seemed to encase me on all sides. As Asuma enclosed slowly on me, the fire seemed to close up behind him. It just kept getting smaller and smaller. The air seemed to get thicker and thicker.

5 feet radius…

4 feet radius…

3 feet…

2 feet…

Asuma pulled his trench knife up, charging it with so much chakra that a bright blue blade on energy made its way around the weapon. I sat there, simply dumbfounded. I could barely breathe, I couldn’t fight… I…

“Now,” Asuma said with a slight smile. “DIE!”

In that moment, time seemed to stop. I could barely breathe, and the air was thick with smoke. The ground below me seemed to be sinking into itself, and I could feel the slight burn marks all across my body. I just needed a minute, just one minute to collect myself. The fire was consuming my body. I couldn’t… I can’t… I-

Suddenly, an explosion of what looked like blue fire emanated from my body. It was so sudden, very flashy in a sense, but sudden none the less. I suddenly felt hyped, like I could run for miles on end and not pass out.

“Genjutsu: Kai!”

It all stopped. The air began to crack only moments before reality shattered. I was sitting there, right on the edge of the rock just like before, as if I had never moved. My scarf was fine, my clothes were unscathed, and the forest looked just like it did before the fight. Turning my head, I looked at a smirking Kurenai, who released the tiger seal she had made with her hands, looking at me right in the face.

“Congratulations.” She said. “You’re now producing chakra.”
