* * Cyrus’s POV * *
Money was the biggest issue on my mind right now. I’m not trying to sound like I need to have one million dollars on me every day or I’ll die of disease, but I came into this world with twenty dollars in my pocket, and everything here is paid in Ryo. Unfortunately for me, that twenty dollars didn’t transfer like my appearance did, and now I’m broke and waiting for Kakashi to come to the training grounds.
The day after I was released from the hospital, an Anbu came to my bench and told me to come to the Hokage. Why did I say “my bench,” you ask? Well, funny story. I’m currently homeless. I’d live with Naruto but the Hokage said that’d be a violation of sanitary, and I’d find my own home, however, twenty American dollars can’t even buy you shit in this world. It’s come to a point where my only options are to find a nice warm bench every night or to spend six hours awake on a branch in a tree somewhere in a nearby forest.
They cut me some slack when I met up with the Hokage. I’ve been wearing the same thing since I came to Konoha a few days ago and I smelt and looked like I had been hit by a garbage truck that turned over and unloaded all of its filth onto me. Hiruzen told me that he was going to put me on a form of ‘Financial Aid’ while I was training. Basically, he would give me money every week to compensate for the fact that I made no money. I had to get a quick lesson on currency in the Naruto world, which was actually very normal for kids my age. Essentially, Ryo was a currency used before it was replaced by Yen. I took it all into consideration and checked a library for a crash course in finance. Since a Yen is a tenth of a Ryo, and it takes 118 Yen for there to be a solid US dollar, it made enough sense to say that I had figured out economy in Naruto.
With this new knowledge, I figured out how Yen translated to Ryo which translated to Dollars which translated to what exactly I would be paid. The Hokage said that I’d be getting paid 5,000 Ryo a week, which was 50,000 Yen which was around 422 dollars. Since I was only one person, that’d be enough to fuel my needs as a human and my needs as a ninja. Along with that, he assigned me an apartment near Naruto’s, mainly because he wanted to keep both of us in check while allowing us to have easy access to each other if we ever wanted to talk or meet up to eat ramen.
My apartment was pretty simple. It was on the second floor of Naruto’s building, a floor below his, and close to the stairs. The building smelled like someone sprayed down every inch with laundry detergent, and the walls outside were painted a very ugly olive green color, something I hated about the building overall.
I’m getting a new house when I become a Chunnin.
Besides that, the place was nice and there weren’t any rats or anything to be afraid of. I grew up in a nice townhouse before I came here, but my mother was a very strange person and insisted that I check for anything bad about where I lived before I fully moved in. Ironically, I took her advice.
Once I settled myself down, I got right to work. The Hokage sent me 5,000 Ryo and I intended to use it. I ended up spending nearly 3,000 of it stocking up on food, followed by another 1,000 on regular clothes for regular people. The last 1,000 I had actually wasn’t enough for what I really wanted to get. I’d have to wait until the next week to stock up on full ninja supplies, but I did get myself a full ninja outfit and some low grade weapons with the remainder of my money. It came down to a full set of kunai and shiruken (10 each), 2 full wire reels, a few scrolls that I could use later in my days as a ninja, and one windmill shiruken that I could use for emergencies.
My outfit was actually quite nice. I went to a clothing shop one last time (the last time I will ever go clothes shopping until my clothes get burned off) and purchased some stuff. I came out of there with an appropriate ninja attire: A black long-sleeve with the sleeves rolled up to just below my elbows, black pants, black ninja shoes that completely covered my foot (save for my toes) up to about an inch or two above my ankle, and a white scarf since it was starting to get cold out. I also bandaged a majority of my showing skin to lessen the chance of minor cuts. A spare holster that Naruto gave me was attacked to my left thigh, and I found myself looking in the mirror at how wonderful I was at creating an outfit for myself.
I got to the training grounds not to long after I made some last minute checks on my supplies. Once I filled up my weapons holster and got myself the appropriate medical equipment, I ran to the training grounds to get the overview from my sensei. So, here we are now, waiting on Kakashi to get his lazy ass to the training grounds.
“So…” I began awkwardly, twirling the ends of my scarf on my finger. I wasn’t exactly sure of how I would start a conversation with these people since I know a lot about them yet I can’t just go blurting out “You’re boyfriends going to die in Shippuden!”
“So?” Kurenai said, looking about as able to chat as I was. Luckily, Gai had a quick and easy way to burn down our chances of talking while getting us “hyped” for the next few hours of training. Either that or waiting for Kakashi.
“Talk is cheap, my friends. Let us go and jog 20 laps around the training fields!” He exclaimed, jogging in place already to warm up his legs.
“Ok.” Both Kurenai and I said in unison before beginning a slow walk around the training grounds. Gai didn’t even bother to wait up for us as he zoomed around the field and river more times than I could count.
“So, Kurenai-sensei,” I said. “How’d you end up becoming a ninja of the leaf?”
“Ah, so you do have some questions for me.” She said with a smile. She never did get enough screen time to explain her past fully. Most of it was either comprised entirely of plot holes or was said so separately that it was never really explained properly. Regardless, I got to hear what I already knew. Kurenai was extremely talented in genjutsu, assisted in the defense of the village against the 9 tails, had minor interactions with major characters, and was a pretty useful character that just didn’t get the screen time.
She asked me how I came to Konoha and why I wanted to become a ninja. I answered honestly, telling her that I didn’t know how I ended up here but that a higher being puts us all in a certain place for a certain reason and we must take advantages of those reasons. In truth, that’s what I believed.
The call of a bird stopped our talk, along with the fact that walking was boring and everyone wanted to sit down. The bird landed on Gai’s outstretched arm, to which he pet it lightly, took its message, and allowed it to fly back to the messaging room.
“What’s it say?” Kurenai asked as Gai opened up the scroll and read it over for himself.
“Kakashi is dealing with an issue right now and can’t come until late in the day. Asuma’s going to be here in a few minutes to take his place, then we can begin.” Gai paraphrased. He handed the scroll directly to Kurenai, who read it over and sighed audibly.
“Sometimes these kids…” She said quietly to herself. Gai gave her a stern look and moved his eyes quickly to me and back. She looked surprised for a moment before standing up to dispose of the scroll. As it disappeared from her hand in a puff of smoke, she looked at Gai, who nodded and looked at me. They both stood up now, looking down at my confused face.
“Well, until Asuma gets here, we’ll gladly answer any specific questions about Konoha or general ninja things that you may be concerned about.” Kurenai said.
I took it into consideration. I didn’t have any major issues that needed to be addressed, and I was more or less interested in the actual lesson rather than this, however, I’m taking advantage of it anyway.
“Can I get a decent weapon?”
* * *
3 minutes later, Asuma jumped through the tree line and landed between all 3 of us, looking rather exhausted and apparently covered in tar.
“Took you long enough. So, how’d it go?” Kurenai asked with a hint of a smile on her face.
“Well, he made a jutsu to pour tar on every ninja who got near him.” He said as he picked a dried piece off of his lower lip. “It’s pretty gruesome out there. All over the mountain too.”
“All over the mountain?!” Kurenai yelled as she looked over to the Hokage monument. A crossed my legs on the rock I was sitting on and pushed the trail of my scarf over to my back, looking up at the mountain. Sure enough, the entire thing was covered in a thick black liquid.
“How did he even do that? Shouldn’t that be considered terrorism?” Gai asked in confusion.
“Shouldn’t you people be training me?” I asked in a bored tone, my hand finding its way to my chin as I rested the majority of my head on my hand. All 3 shinobi looked at me and deadpanned a bit. They tried to keep this secret from me for the past 4 minutes when it’s apparently the most noticeable thing in the entire village. That’s sad.
“Sorry about that,” Asuma said. “Let’s get right down into this. What’s on the agenda today, guys?” He said, sounding more like he was supposed to be on a kids show rather than training someone who’s going to be capable of snapping someone’s neck using nothing but a water bottle.
“Asuma’s right. It’s the villages concern right now. For now, we need to focus on training you. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.” Kurenai said as she sat down on a rock across from mine. “So, the Hokage explained that you know very little about how the ninja world works, and we’ll get to that later, but for now, what do you know about chakra and the general fighting styles of ninja?”
I looked down at the rock I was sitting on, pondering if I should tell them what I know or save myself the oral lecture on chakra and how ninja work. It was a pretty hard choice, but I really wanted to start training.
With that, I told them everything.
“Chakra is essential to even the most basic technique; it is the molding of the physical energy present in every cell of the body and the spiritual energy gained from the mind. Once molded, it can be channeled through the chakra pathway system, which is to chakra as the circulatory system is to blood, to any of the 361 tenketsu in the body. Through various methods, the most common of which is hand seals, the chakra can then be controlled and manipulated to create an effect that would not be possible otherwise, such as walking on water, exhaling fire or creating illusions.
Through the process of nature transformation, chakra can be converted into a number of different natures. Most ninja have a natural affinity to one chakra nature, but they have the capacity to use natures apart from their own affinity. There are five basic natures, but in addition to these, certain genetic traits allow multiple natures to be combined into new natures; for example, it is possible to mix Water and Wind into Ice. While many ninja can use more than one chakra nature, very few are able to combine them in this manner.”
All 3 looked at me as if I just read from a book. I guess I went a little far talking about combinations of nature transformations since I can’t think of a single leaf ninja who’s able to do that.
“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear.” Asuma said as he walked over to the rock I was at. I looked at him oddly as he examined my appearance and looked at me with a sly smile.
“Now we’re going to get into the fun part.” Asuma stepped back a bit and began to weave a string of hand seals. “As a ninja, it’s important to understand the concept and application of chakra. In your case, however, you only have a small amount inside of you that isn’t flowing. Because of how the body works, we’re going to use adrenaline to jump start your chakra. Kurenai and Gai will track your process and see if your chakra is flowing. As for me…”
Asuma weaved the last seal, looking at me dead in the eye. I flinched a bit, then stepped off my rock and found myself backing into the edge of the forest. Gai and Kurenai looked at Asuma with a bit of worry, all 3 of us oblivious to what was about to happen.
“I’M GOING TO BE YOUR JOLT! FUUTON: FUUJIN NO JUTSU!”
And with that, I ran into the forest, being chased by a growing cloud of dust.
