Something i find interesting is that some people think that the reason why the black flames/Amaterasu do more damage then regular Katon ninjutsu is because the flames are hotter then normal flames which is wrong.
Besically if the flames had high temperature they would emit light instead of absorb it hence why the black color of the flames.

I will explain what i mean with a candle flame example .

Often, we observe black color on the outer edges of a candle flame or near the base. The blackish color on the edge is actually soot particles and residue produced from a yellow colored flame due to lack of oxygen around that particular area. You may also see black color at the inner most zone of the candle flame. The black color is actually wax vapor which are not burnt due to lack of oxygen. Some substances can be burned at temperatures around 425degrees, they dont emit visible light.

What im getting at is that if the flames were hotter then regular flames then we will atleast have some visible light or signs of radiating temperatures around the flames. Here is some manga proof that the flames themselves dont have a high temperature :

Naruto standing near the flames without feeling any sort of heat or whatever :

Karin getting barely burned by the after flames, the flames also don't produce any vapor in the water :

The flames canot burn samurai armor even though are hotter then normal flames ?

Yeah but some would still say that Amaterasu did massive damage against Jiraiya's toad technique and Hachibi.
Going by this observation i'd say that Amaterasu does damage in 2 ways :

1) Even though the heat of the flames is below that of light emiting flames the temperature is connstant which causes damage over time.
This is very important because if you take a lightning bolt for example it can generate temperatures like the sun surface but for a breef moment only or regular Katon jutsus are fired in the form of a blast that still depend on oxygen to sustain the high temperature for longer periods of time.
Amaterasu isnt dependant on oxygen apperantly.

2) The initial Amaterasu does concentrated damage like a chakra blast.
Most likely because the chakra is far more concentrated then normal chakra.
You can see the initial Amaterasu that starts to spin here :

Nagato also notes that there is chakra pressure just before Itachi casts Amaterasu implying that the technique usess some form of concentrated chakra :

So i would conclude that the black flames arent real flames in the traditional sense but some chakra vapor substance that has high temperature but not as high as a light emiting flame (around 425 degrees or below).
An intersting thought would be that the black Amaterasu flames could represent the Juubi's chakra shroud. Besically a buffed up version of the Kyuubi's red chakra shroud accessed by KN4 and KN6 .

What think you ?

Good stuff, but I think the data-book states that Amaterasu is "as hot as the sun" or something. I think that's why everyone says that, but I'm not sure I've never read it.

definitely not, if it was anything close to the sun it would insta-fry opponents

karin would be a pile of ash

that fodder samurai at the kage summit would also be ash

Sorry but you can't go into a detailed scientific explanation of the black flames of Amaterasu. I think that the only reason the samurai survived is because it takes the flames longer to burn through metal and Karin survived because the flames were just on here back and she was face down while they were burning. Sasuke also retracted the flames immediately and this would mean that minimal damage would be caused. The flames obviously burn flesh and chakra faster.

Here it incinerates Sasuke's left over skin quickly after the flames covered up much of his lower body

Here it burns through the flame retardant toad stomach quickly

Here it burns the entirety of the 8 tails chakra flesh relatively fast

All instances of Amaterasu burning something quickly were on flesh and covered the entirety of the target. I agree with you on the concentrated aspect of the heat of the flames. I think they only release excess heat upwards, this would make them efficient in burning longer (dang science). There haven't been any signs of a chakra explosion, or else people hit but it would have something blown off, like the samurai.

great job finding a scientific explanation to a fictional ninjutsu ability. no sarcasm intended. really impressive
