Well I thought so at first. But you should consider a few things first, Obito has refused a few times now to really explain his reasoning in detail. Also he was trapped with Madara for years, so brainwashing is likely. My theory is, yes witnessing Rin's death was a factor also the fact that Kakashi was forced to make such a decision (killing Rin). He then realized and began to understand what Madara meant when he would say the world is full of hatred, fighting and it would never change until it was under the spell of the Tsukiyomi. He then begins to feel as though the only way to prevent further sadness and hatred in the world is to put every one in a fake reality. So in a sick and twisted way Obito's reasoning is to prevent everyone else from experiencing loss and depression.

OT: Pain is subjective; different people react to pain in different ways. Obito had his own unique way that cannot, could not and should not be compared to Itachi, Shikamaru, Sasuke, Madara... or anyone elses pain and reaction.
