The reason for this is because obito warps space/time to use the jutsu.
Obito bends S/T in such a way that he can bring the space between the fire technique and the target closer, technically increasing the range of the attack.
It is very similar to the warp drive in star trek
As you can see from the picture the warp drive works by bringing the space between the ship and it's destination closer and everything else further it bring the ship closer to the target location. This is the reason why they can travel faster than light. Using this principle we can see that obito can make his fireball travel further without the need for him to waste his breath blowing more fire to increase range. By doing the reverse of the warp drive,he can send the fire technique further from him. Which means in theory obito can make the fireball have infinite range simply by using kamui to warp the S/T continuum.
