Yes, he really admires Minato and hence even without the face of Minato on the mountain, (but shown) Obito already pictured Minato as the next hokage (shown in the manga page). If Kishi really tried to show it like that, then we will see the imaginary face of Minato on the mountain in the anime, imagined by Obito.
And that's why Obito copies Minato's way of doing things

Who knows... but it was worth of noticing. It is very probable that Minato did this often and so Obito adquired the behaviour, but your point of view is as valid as well.
