The curse of hatred has destroyed the lives of several Uchiha members, the select few who possess the powers of the MS.

Now, Madara had a vision with the first hokage, he wanted to create unity between clans; where there has been pain, agony, and hardship. He began good, he had a heart that wanted to reach out to the other clan. He wanted to unify.
However; at the time, his father did not want unity between the enemy clans.
Madara and the 1st had to separate, sadly. After fighting for years between the Senju and the Uchicha, they finally were able to come to a truce, only after had Madara's closest brother died, causing Madara to transform his MS to an EMS.
With his new eyes.. it seems that Madara, who was a leader of the clan, direct blood line of the elder son, developed the ability to incase Gedo Mazou with Susano, only then will his susano contain the power to "crush anything in existence"
The 1st and Madara fight in the valley of the end, Madara, showcasing his intentions by covering the Kyuubi with Susano, and being unable to obtain the other tailed beasts due to the 1st giving them away to different sources and villages.
Somehow shape or form Madara had obtained the firsts power, thats great Madara, but you're about to die.
Well I'm glad you mentioned that, Madara with his EMS, was going after the Rinnegan, with the Rinnegan he would plot the Eye of the Moon plan, to do this, he needed an apprentice to bring him back when the time was near.
However, who to continue's Madara's path but a disheartened blood member?
Madara eventually develops the Rinnegan, and reading the tablet, he realized that he had the rarity power of Susano, a Tengu appearance power.
><>< Now, in my opinion, Susano is much more then just a protective armor, Susano seems to be as tall as the Gedo Mazou, and is possibly an alternative for the Elder Brothers bloodline to tame the tailed beasts and the juubi if the time came. Why would the two brothers have juubi taming abilities?!?!?! Well of course if the beast was to be awakened that the So6P would have a fail safe. I believe the failsafe of the Uchicha is Susano.
why you ask?
Susano begins as a ribcage, and develops into a Gedo Mazou size armour, that can shapeshift accordingly. I believe that with the Gedo Mazou and the other tailed beasts inside of it, including the kyuubi and habichi, that the Susano would take on the God Buster that Madara had mentioned first, his quote on quote, 'perfect' susano is not perfect without the Gedo Mazou as the host.
1sts taming abilitys have already been mentioned in the manga, wood style, etc, extremely physical traits compared to the spiritual.
now, Madara, on his deathbed needed an apprentice, there was a war going on, and it's very possible that Madara, looking for an apprentice saw that 3 children were left alone, now, he would use genjutsu on the shinobi to capture Rin, Obito would then go to save her, Madara opening to awaken his MS, however, it didn't activate yet as he sacrificed himself.
Try number two, Madara has a damaged apprentice, his apprentice will be unable to use Susano, as you need two eyes, and amatersu and tysukomi, however, obito only having one eye diminished his chances of having Susano, and madara knew this. Madara knew that Obito would be unable to use the U clan. taming ability on the juubi, so he has him "gather" the beasts, and then to sacrifice Nagato for his revival. Note, the Gedo Mazou was originally a prison for the charka of the jinchuriki's it was going to be just a prison until Madara was revived via Nagato like intended.
Well, Obito decides that he wants to run the show instead; this leads him to have to find someone with Susano, now Itachi had susano, however; Obito probably did not trust him enough to do the technique on the Gedo Mazou, and Itachi was disabled due to the crippling disease he had developed. I believe Obito let Itachi and Sasuke fight so that either one would get EMS, thus furthering his cause, it didn't matter WHICH one got EMS, just that one did, as he wasn't aware of Itachi's betrayal.
Sasuke, developed MS due to Itachi's death and the realization that his brother loved him very dearly as he used the last of his power to destroy Orchimaru from him, thus saving him from a possible take over when he was weakened like displayed. Obito, telling Sasuke bs regarding the village, bla bla bla, has him go after Danzo, sasuke develops Susano rather quickly and advances it's stages even faster. Obito mentioning how Sasuke's susano is rather powerful.
Well, Obito planned on doing to Sasuke as to what Madara is doing now. Sasuke was to be hooked up to the gedo mazou, and to create Perfect Susano, with the perfect gedo mazou, all the charka stored.
I believe that Madara will obtain ALL nine tailed beasts, as to create 'perfect' susano.
Now, Sasuke has displayed retinal powers that are far above anything that has even been showcased so far.
He has extinguished the flames of Amatersu, he managed to get Danzo in a genjutsu, perhaps not on the level of itachi, however, I believe that Itachi's susano was based off Tyuskomi, and that's why he had tosuka blade.
While Sasuke has inferno style, and blaze release, and being able to extinguish his flames, as his Susano's blade developed flame's for him to use.
This leads to me to believe that Madara is kind of balanced between the Spiritual side and the physical side of his Susano, HOWEVER, very however, Madara has not displayed his sharingan powers at all, as i believe that he doesn't have a sharingan in his real body anymore. I think to activate the Rinnegan, you must allow yourself to become blind, even with EMS, this means that Madara possibly faked his death by using the Izangi techs, and with taking the first's dna, he was able to allow his blinded eye's to manifest Rinnegan, as it is Yin and Yang, the spiritual and physical.
Madara was only able to switch between his eyes because of Edo Tensai, I think that his Rinnegan is actually his brother's blinded ems eyes, and after obtaining senju dna, the rinnegan formed off the blinded eye.
tl;dr Rinnegan is developed by a blinded EMS eye, which would show how the first was tricked into believing that he was dead, and the presence he noted on top of the mountain was actually Madara getting away after his jutsu had ended, however, blinded, he could no longer continue, having taken the dna he neeed, retreated to develop his rinnegan.
