Yea he was a kind guy. But you should read the Kakashi gaiden part where he was dieing. He became a chunin, has just became good friends with Kakashi, loved Rin, had an awesome sensei and BANG just in 1 second that all was lost. And though Kakashi couldnt save his comrade he was regarded as the "Hero". And that just isnt fair.

Kind people always die first ...
