Madara gave life back to Obito with that Zetsu substance. He can probably shut him down anytime he wants, if he were not to obey. And so could Zetsu while Madara was gone.

Yeah I call blackmail at first but in the end I'm guessing from listening to the poor old man with no escape he starts to see things his way and takes up the cause himself.

I think that a very interesting flaw in Obito's character, is that he is acctually afraid to die. To the point where he would accept Madara's brain washing (over time). Remember his semi-comedic rant about how he doesn't want to be sent to hell and is afraid of the idea of a Shinigami.
