Chapter One: The Last Two Rules

Nothingness is a place separate from Heaven and Hell. Souls in Nothingness wander through Nothingness and feel neither pain nor pleasure. They retain their memories and physical abilities from when they died.
Souls that are too righteous for Hell and too wicked for Heaven go to Nothingness.
A soul can be cursed to go to Nothingness while it is living, and will go to Nothingness no matter its good deeds or sins.
Heaven, Hell, and Nothingness exist for souls in all Universes. No matter what Universe a soul is from, it goes to the same Heaven, hell, or Nothingness.
It is not possible for a soul to escape Nothingness.
It is not a sin to escape Nothingness.
A soul that returns to Earth is judged as if it were a living soul.​

These rules and statements echoed around Light’s head. Light was not sure who told him these rules or when he heard them, but as long as he could remember being in Nothingness, he knew these rules. Light did not like these rules. They reminded him too much of that cursed Death Note and brought back painful memories. Memories…..these were all Light had now. He was and wandering with nothing but painful memories and…
“Hey!” Someone had just bumped into Light. It did not hurt since pain longer existed, but Light knew it had happened all the same.
“Oh, Hello” the stranger said. It was not unusual for Light to see other souls wandering around Nothingness. Light had never spoken to one though. He wanted nothing to do with them. This particular soul was tall with shoulder length black hair and dark eyes, and was wearing a plain Black robe. Light turned away, ; he did not want to talk to anyone.
“Wait!” the stranger called, grabbing Light’s shoulder. Light jerked away.
“Go away” he snapped.
“I heard you muttering the Rules” the stranger said. “The last two Rules." Light was surprised. He had not realized he had been muttering to himself. He had been here far too long.
“So?” Light muttered.
“If you were muttering the last two Rules, you must have realized it too.” The stranger said. Light was taken-a-back. He stared at this soul in wonder. He had been wondering about these two rules. But this soul…was he thinking about them too. Did he know the answer?
“Who are you?” Light asked the strange soul.
“My name is Itachi Uchiha” the stranger said, offering his hand for Light to shake. Light did not take it but continued to stare at the man called Itachi. “What is your name?”
Light considered for a moment and said “My name is Light. Light Yagami.” He paused for a moment. “Do you know the answer? About the last two rules and how they relate to the third to last rule?” he asked eagerly. Was is possible? Could he really know?
“Perhaps” Itachi said. If Light was alive, he thought his heart would have skipped a beat.
“What do you mean” he asked breathlessly, if breath existed at all.
“Come with me,” Itachi said. “There are some people I want you to meet.”

Where are we going?” Light asked. He thought about that question for a second. “And does location exist in this place?
“Location does not exist. Not really.” Itachi explained. “But the distance between souls can change. As does the distance between a soul and the Door.”
Light did not know what the Door was, but his condescending nature took over. “Distance is the extent of space between two points. If distance exists, than so does location!”
Itachi smiled. “Nothingness is not a physical place. The rules of time and space don’t apply. That’s what separates Heaven from the Soul Society in another Universe.”
Light had no idea what Itachi meant by that, but before he could ask, he saw three souls standing together and looking at them.
“Ah, here we are” Itachi said.
“Hi Itachi!” said a one of the souls, a teenage girl, excitedly.
“You’ve been gone a while, I feared you would not come backed” said a tall woman softly.
“And who is this you’ve got with you, Uchiha?” a sallow-skinned man demanded.
Light stared at the three strangers. They all looked nothing alike and were the last people you’d think would be together. At least on Earth. This was not Earth, so weird things like this could happen Light supposed.
The Teenage girl who had spoken first looked around fifteen or sixteen, with pink hair and strangely regal garments. The tall woman had long black hair that covered her face and was wearing a white coat over a black robe. The man was sallow skinned and appeared to be in his late thirties, and like Itachi he had shoulder length black hair, although his was loose while Itachi wore a ponytail in the back.
“Hello everyone!” Itachi said. "This is my new friend Light."
Since when am I your friend?, Light thought, but kept silent and nodded politely to the three strangers.
“Hello Light!” the girl bubbled excitedly. “My name is Euphimia, but you can call me Euphie.”
“My name is Severus Snape” the man said simply.
“One can say that those of us who are in Nothingness have two names, or perhaps more.” The women said is a mysterious tone. “you can call me Retsu, or you can call me Kenpachi, whichever you prefer. I prefer Retsu, but since I am here, I cannot escape my other name.
“If you want to be called Retsu then that is what you will be called” Itachi told the women kindly.
‘Do you think this new kid can help us, Uchiha. This girl here is enough of a burden.” Snape grumbled.
“I am not a burden!” Euphie cried indignantly.
“No one here is a burden, Severus” Itachi said.
“Who are you guys?” Light finally asked. He did not understand what this strange group of people was doing together. Did they all know something about those two rules?
“We are simply souls like you who grow tired of Nothingness” said the woman with two names.
“Let us sit down, we have much to discuss” Itachi said.
“What are we discussing?” Light inquired excitedly.
“It is simple” the man called Severus Snape said. “we are going to escape from Nothingness.”
