After re-reading chapter 599 (not going to post the whole thing, just reread it yourself), I can kind of understand where Tobi's actions are coming from. He [in my opinion] had the most justifiable reasons out of the 3 who know loneliness (Naruto, Gaara and Sasuke). Here is why-
Naruto started off pretty sad, but quickly got famous around the village.
Gaara was pretty much always sad until Naruto battled him, and they made a turn around and he started seeing things at a more positive light.
Sasuke's childhood was good, went bad when Itachi killed everybody, and back good when he was getting comfortable with his Team 7, and back bad when he went with Oro.
But Tobi was always seen as a regular kid, but the shadow of Kakashi in his team. He was always getting outshown, and his crush never noticed him LIKE THAT until he died. He never really made any progress in really equaling Kakashi before he died anyway, so his life was pretty much dedicated to that challenge to get Rins attention (remember this sentence, because it's the highlight of this post). He was pretty much the underling of his whole team to be honest, and that's just because he has never been shown soloing any opponent in his youth and winning. His most impressive feats were right after he got Sharingan, and then Kakashi was by his side when that happened.
But this isn't a childhood comparison thread, I was just giving an example. But back to what I said to remember; He never really made any progress in equaling Kakashi before he died anyway, so his life was pretty much dedicated to that challenge to get Rins attention. Could you imagine living a life like that? Trying to become a shinobi, and constantly being overshadowed by your rival and him getting NOT ONLY your love interests attention, but also the support of the whole village behind you? And not that they consider you a 'fodder' or anything, just that you're never noticed, even when you try really hard.
And one thing that I Knew had to hurt him was when he was first challenging Gai at the beginning of the Chunin exams, and he had gotten his ass handed to his palms. But then, when Kakashi got on, everybody started cheering him on and making such a ruckus when he had won, he was the center of POSITIVE attention. To add insult to injury, his body language even indicated that he was thinking 'not even a problem' and bluffing.
Then, he finally achieves Chunin status, by alternate means. He prepares a gift for Rin in hopes of maybe a date, with flowers. Instead, he is greeted with an invitation for Kakashi's Jonin surprise gift... just imagine how broke he felt. Defeated at the tournaments by Gai, who was easily taken down by a very capable Kakashi who then get promoted on the spot, while he later on finds a way to get promoted by alternate means, probably training. He finally escalates to Kakashi's rank, and right when he plans on making a move towards Rin, gets blown away by a gift to give Kakashi's promotion to HIGHER rank. He has to fake a smile so he doesn't come off as clearly petty or jealous, cringing his body on the inside. When taking his actions into consideration, I think people look too long at the big picture and end up missing vital details.
Then, Rin gets trapped and Tobi is infuriated that the man she's so interested in, his rival basically gives him a 'meh' reaction, and that the mission comes first. And before anybody says 'naw dewd, he wasnt infuriated the manga didnt shew it dewd', the manga can't show every single thing ever... even if his face in the panel didn't exactly match the description of infuriation, you can use common sense to put 2 and 2 together, and tell what was on his mind. This is the assumption I make on his reaction.
So, he goes after Rin, Kakashi decides to show up to his relief, and right when things start looking up, he achieves Sharingan and gets his face crushed under a boulder. He entrusts Rin's safety to Kakashi, gets sent to hell and is given a harsh debriefing by Madara, soon after gets sent back up to surface, only to see Rin get pierced by her love interest, his rival and friend, Kakashi. Over a year in hell of training and hard work, looking so forward to at least seeing them again, and that's what he gets to see. A damn shame.
And one more thing that I feel like a lot of people are missing is this... once you've been seperated from society for so long, and in a place as intense as hell with the most infamous Uchiha known to the Shinobi world, you can't progress in your life. You simply can't move on to new things, you soon lose yourself, your thoughts and reduce yourself to what reminded you of happiness. To the last sights of your life that bought a smile on your face, and then your gone. You begin to forget about everything else, and your memory over time becomes reduced to what were the lights of your life and last words... and since he was gone for so long, only to be bought back by that horrible scene, this is why I believe that Tobi's actions are justified.
Tl;DR- People have a terrible tendancy of reducing his childhood to 'destroying the world over a 12 year old crush', and don't understand the pain he really felt... and that's it.
Do you agree with me? Disagree? Thoughts?

And then look at Rins reaction, you could see she was very impressed, for the lack of a more formal word. He was clearly jealous. Then, he finally achieves Chunin status, by alternate means.
