I have been thinking about this for a while and decided to create a topic thread about this. In the Naruto series, each of the five great ninja villages did some things in the past that were questionable or in the bad side. It varies in severity from village to village but it shows that not everything is perfect.
I have listed the five villages and what they did in the past that would be questionable or in the bad side. Not sure if I got all of the things yet, let me know if I missed any and I will add it.
Village Hidden in the Leaves (Konohagakure) - the Uchiha Clan Massacre in which Danzo ordered Itachi to murder the entire Uchiha clan. It was not the entire village that did it; it appears it was the council elders and Danzo who were responsible due to the Third Hokage trying to resolve the Uchiha conflict peacefully. Also Sakumo Hatake was scorned by most of the people in the village after he failed a mission and it caused him to commit suicide to preserve his clan’s honor. The mission must have been very important and the failure might have caused something very bad to happen. And also, the 4th Hokage had to seal the Nine Tails inside of Naruto when he was still a baby. This is similar to what happened with Gaara except that the 4th Hokage had no other choice due to the beast’s massive chakra reserves. He could only seal away half of the chakra.
Village Hidden in the Mist (Kirigakure) - there was a bloody graduation exam where graduates had to kill each other to fully become ninja. And also, those with kekkei genkai abilities were purged due to the people thinking that they only bring war and death. This and the bloody graduation exams have likely stopped due to Mei Terumi, the 5th Mizukage, saying that the dreadful days of Yagura are long over.
Village Hidden in the Clouds (Kumogakure) - Head Ninja tried to kidnap Hinata during a peace treaty signing. And when Hiashi killed the ninja, Cloud demanded his body claiming that the Hidden Leaf attacked first and that they had no knowledge of the Head Ninja’s actions. It was Cloud who started it because they wanted the byakugan ability for themselves.
Village Hidden in the Sand (Sunagakure) – they were deceived into betraying the Leaf by Orochimaru when he killed the 4th Kazekage and took his identity. They also had some motives to attack Hidden Leaf such as the fact they feared the Sand village military force was becoming weak. This action also broke a peace treaty but they found out their real Kazekage was dead so they surrendered. Also, the 4th Kazekage put the sand monster known as Shukaku inside of Gaara so he could be used as a weapon. This made him turn insane and become unstable due to his treatment by others.
Village Hidden in the Rocks (Iwagakure) – their ninja sometimes resort to very underhanded tactics to achieve their goals, which causes other ninja villages to not trust them a lot. And they also betrayed the Mist ninjas they were assisting in stealing documents from Hidden Cloud village.
